jjtroutbum Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 Pop figuring them out at the end of the catch and release section. Cool breezes, warm sun, very moderate temps. Chilly sleeping temps. Started in the afternoon after setting up camp in a mostly empty park campground (at least in the basic/ primitive camping section). The crowds were at a minimum mostly retirees and a few groups of fishermen. With weather like that I would give this trip a A but with as much catching as we did I would have to up the grade to a A+. Water was perfect up a bit and slightly green and cloudy in pools and deeper channels. No monsters caught but did see a few. Most fish were 10 to 14 inches in size. Had the most fun and success with EHC with red and black zebra midge droppers. Probably had ten to one hits verses the caddis , but did have plenty of takes on the dries. Also caught with soft hackles, buggers, and crackle backs. Did start the second day with a red "egg pattern" that did the damage on a bunch of the early morning hatchery fresh fish at the dam. Seemed that a few of the fellas around bouncing jigs and throwing spinners on the ultra lights did well also. The weather and the park were the real stand outs of the trip. ekl-stl Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 Fishing was pretty good today.. Weather is great and it appears they are raising some good money for the Hear Association.. No tagged fish but I caught a 7lb 6oz bow on a brown Pine Squirrel.

The earlier floods had really done a number on the stream, particularly in the fly area. The top of the blue hole at that time was really scoured out and very deep. Is it still that way? How are the water levels in general in the upper areas? I am heading down on the 15th for 4 days and would appreciate any information passed along. Scott Scott
Bman Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 JJ, Glad you got lucky with the weather and no crowds, last week was a great time to be on the water with your Dad. Thanks for the report. Bman The only good line is a tight line
10pointer Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 Congrats ekl-stl on your lunker, on a fly rod im guessin? You happen to catch that biggun just below hudson corner? I heard a guy cuaght a nice one on a flyrod down that way! Had a great time down there as usual for the holland. I ended up with a 8lb 4oz male with a big ole hook jaw. It was a beautiful fish for sure 27" long. Those males are always a couple lbs smaller than they look, ill post a pic a lil later. I lost 2 more lunkers so i should have had 3 total but stuff happens and i was glad to land that one big ole guy. I also ended up with 2 tagged fish Great weekend and i cant wait until c&r season!!!!!
ekl-stl Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 I caught it on the down stream side of the big dam on the fly rod.. it was a male with a nice sharp jaw as well.. I only saw one other big fish caught, just below the handicap hole in the campground and I saw a BIG fish above the dam but she was cruising. 10pt- nice fish congrats.. I never did see a big one in the spring and we fished with about 10 people up there for the first hour on Saturday without a single tagged fish caught.. I think they didn't stock that area..
