Members gobblergetter Posted October 6, 2008 Members Posted October 6, 2008 we fished fellows for about four hours last week and it was slow surface temp was reading in the low 80s we managed one small crappie 6 or 8 inches and another about 11 and two short walleye. it was good to get the boat out and do a little fishing on the lake its been nearly 3 months since the boat was in the water. i hoping things will be picking back up here soon. with the water temp starting to drop. however i did see two guys sitting right in the middle of the lake. using bobbers about 5 foot deep using minnows and crankin the crappie in left and right but they averaged i would say in the 7 inch range hardly big enough to consider keeping for me but i dont guess for them, they put every fish they caught in a cooler.
Members fisher19 Posted October 9, 2008 Members Posted October 9, 2008 gobblergetter, were you fishing in the weeds or over brush piles? And nice bird. How long were you sittin there til he came in?
Members gobblergetter Posted October 10, 2008 Author Members Posted October 10, 2008 we fished over the brush piles the weeds are starting to die off and the o2 is pretty low around them so we focused more on brush piles. however we noticed something chasing bait fish all over the lake and then the guys catching the small crappie out in the middle of the lake about 5 feet deep. so I am wondering if maybe they arent suspended in mid lake the deeper u fish the bigger the fish will get? I dont know just a guess, however i hate fishing for suspended fish especially when there is no cover in site, its just to tedious. Thanks on the bird and actually from the time i walked passes the hay barn where i was parked at i was there 17 minutes. shootin a turkey on this place is like shootin fish in a barrel. i see between 30 and fifty birds on any given day. two years ago in the spring i had 9 gobblers struttin in the alfalfa field along with 4 jakes and 7 hens. its been very well managed and very selective on who can hunt this property. there is like an unwritten rule that no hen is to be killed period not with a bow not with a gun fall hunting or otherwise. G.G.
Members fisher19 Posted October 12, 2008 Members Posted October 12, 2008 When the water was in the 80's a month ago I went up there and had some luck in the weeds. But since they are dying, i would fish the brush around 15ft. Thats were we usually picked them up and the later in the day it got they moved up shallower. I've been told that crappie will run bait fish to the top of the water, but they won't break the surface of the water after them. They only make a little wake on the top of the water chasin them. But if the guys were cathin them in the middle of the lake like that, I would just try and fish a little deeper than what they were and see if you can't pick up the bigger ones. Wow, only being there for 17 mins is awesome. And thats great that the piece of property is managed like that, makes for great huntin and proved it. The shortest turkey hunt i've been on was about 30 mins in the middle of the day. Been seeing a couple in the same area this last week so when ever i get time im goin to try and go.
Members gobblergetter Posted October 13, 2008 Author Members Posted October 13, 2008 yeah the property is a pretty amazing place. but back onto the fish. since i posted on here last my dad has started catching them. i have not had a chance to go but hope to go tomorrow for a little bit. he caught 10 fish that he considers keepers we kind of imposed a limit on ourselves we keep nothing under 9 inches. and the second day he caught 13 keepers and about 10 more that were under 9 inches
