Members FLYFISHINMAN Posted October 6, 2008 Members Posted October 6, 2008 Heading down to Bennett on Wednesday evening with two buddies. Both are die hard bass and crappie fisherman and had never caught trout on a fly rod. We woke up early for the horn on Thursday so they could experience the crowd waiting anxiously to toss their line into the water. One of my buddies limited out by 10am using only his fly rod so he was happy. The other guy could not quite get the hang of the fly rod so he switched back to his spinning reel, but he also limited out by 10am. He was also happy since he had never gotten his limit at a trout park. Seems hard to believe, but he has only been a hand full of times. With the help of all the guys posting here, I made sure I used that knowledge to stock up on those certain flies and fish the areas mentioned here. It was a great time and we caught a ton of fish. Caught them on the following: cracklebacks, brown scuds, prince and hare's ear nymphs, chamois worms, san juan worms, jigs,wd-40,zebra midge, glo balls The brown scud was the most consistent. It caught fish in the spring hole almost all day long. It was a great few days hanging out and getting a few more guys interesting in trout fishing!! Thanks for the info! Dave
flyfishmaster Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 Awsome days on the water and great weather to boot. Thanks for the report. Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
brittsnbirds Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 Was it not a fantastic weekend down there. I was there from Thursday morning till last night. I would have to say that the fishing was very inconsistent for me but I tend to be a purist. I had to change flies frequently and/or move a lot. My cousin did well on a peach colored mini jig. It was just about the most consistent lure for him. I caught a few on a black beetle, crackleback (top and sub surface), san juan worm, Y2K, RS2 (20) and a little olive rabbit leach with legs (deep). I caught more small fish this trip than I have all my others this summer. Rumor on the river was they are culling out the runts? Still makes it fun. I noticed that the human hatch was up quite a bit. Spoke with Eric at the store. He said as of Saturday night they were down approximately 9,000 tags compared to last year. Pat
flyfishmaster Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 britt, Now what is an RS2... Just Kiddin!! Anyway, down 9,000 tags from last year. I don't think that is all that bad since the stream "according to some people" is not the sames as the past years (higher faster water), so they decided not to come down. Also what else has happened this year... oh that's right higher gas price. later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
brittsnbirds Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 ffm- Just found the numbers Eric gave me, 9631 as of Friday night. Includes children tags. What is the standard color of an RS2? I had a couple different colors. Also need to find some Cree saddle and neck hackle, any ideas? Pat
flyfishmaster Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 Britt, The standard colors for the RS2 I use are gray, olive and black but only make them in size 20 or smaller. No idea on the Cree or neck hackle, I don't any fancy stuff when when making my flies. Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
