Finally got a chance to fish Bennett this past weekend. Only had a chance to fish a few hours in the afternoon. The water was finally down to where it was just about perfect as far as flow and clarity. We battled high winds and falling leaves all day, but I would not have wanted to be anywhere else. Temperature-wise, you could not ask for a better day in late October.

The fishing, on the whole, was a little slow. I started just below the bridge in Zone 2, fishing the faster water. After 3-4 casts, I hooked into a decent fish on a copper john. However, that would be the last fish I would see for probably an hour and a half. I worked my way down to the bridge seperating zone 2 and 3 and did not pick up a single fish. I tried everything from cracklebacks to scuds to micro eggs and could not get a hit. The fish were definately there, but they were more interested in chasing one another than in feeding.

I made my way to the bridge between zone 2 and 3, and decided to put on the old reliable: white floss. I have been using this fly for several years, and it has been a go-to fly when nothing else will work. I rigged it to sit about 2 and 1/2 feet below the indicator and drifted it about 30 yards above the bridge in mid-river. Suddenly, I found magic and picked up about a dozen fish in virtually the same spot. Nothing of size to report, but they helped to repair a partially bruised ego.

Here's one for the white floss fly!

Thanks for the report.

Ditto, you sure can't beat it when your hurting for a fish. Did you try Y2K at all? Last time I was down that was the ticket on finicky fish. Hopefully I will figure out what the ticket is tomorrow.

Glad you hooked into some. That's funny how they will dial in on a particular fly, then it's a blast. This year it seems the hot fly of the day is cold the next.

Pat,

Never tried Y2K. Just picked one up the other day. How do you rig it and where on the stream have you had the most success? Thanks.

In regards to the RS2, I rig it just like a scud or zebra midge pattern. bma turned me onto them this past spring. His instructions were to give it just enough weight to bounce off of the bottom but not enough to hang up. It will hang sometimes but the key is to watch your little bitty indicator for the most suttle un-natural movement. Then "rip their lips off!" I use the putty tungsten paste for weight as you can take or add what little bit you want to get just the right drift. Natural drift is the other key, be sure to mend your line to keep the indicator and line from pulling the fly down river as it will not get down to the bottom. If you watch trout when they are feeding on the bottom or in a seam they catch stuff that comes to them for the most part. However I have watched them move 4 feet to the side to get the RS2.

As far as indicatiors go, I use the smallest that I can tolerate. I like the Lightning (I think) round balls with the rubber band. The rubber band allows you to slide it up and down depending on the area you a fishing. Sometimes I will slide the indicator way up and sight fish. Depending on the depth of the water.

Don't forget you can always use it as a dropper under your favorite attractor or behind a soft hackle. Last week I used it with a PT and a rusty midge pattern in some riffles.

I read that fmf (who is bma's brother) is going down on the 14th. If you located him he probably has the RS2 in his blood also and would be happy to show you how to "rip some lips".

Good luck!

Pat

btw- charlie reading has his own RS2 pattern and sells the dubbing at his store. I think it is a gray color, maybe off green. I tie them both ways.
