Fished Zone 1 from 11:00 AM till 2:00 PM. Park was busy but not especially crowded with temps in mid 50s upon arrival. Nice, nice hatches going on and fish were feasting...real good dry fly and soft hackle action. Light rain sprinkles and showers. Lots of fish caught with activity turning down about 1:00 PM with the cold front moving closer and temps dropping. Great morning and early afternoon before the front got closer. For those down for the weekend, a brutal Saturday ahead with cold and high winds.

I also was down at Bennett, I was able to take my wife along as well. At Bob mentioned it was off and on showers (more sprinkles than anything) but I was able to stay dry due to a great wading jacket.

I fished from 8:30 - 12 in the "High Bank" section in Zone 2. I did catch a lot of fish including 6 browns (one being 18+") but I do have to say the total number of fish in this section is down compared to past years. I did hook in to a brown for a few minutes that would dwarf the one in my avatar picture (that is one big fish). There were about 8 different fisherman that were in the area through out the morning, but it was not crowded at all. Like Bob said there was a hatch going on, but I did not dry fly fish, I concintrated on the emergers istead. So here is the list of flies that whacked them (in nor particular order):

My version of glo-ball, "Sloppy balls"

sz 20 Buckskin

sz 20 Black or Red Zebra midge

sz 20/22 Crystal midge (fresh water shimp imitation)

sz 22 Yong Special (rust color)

sz 20 Mercury Phesant Tails

sz 20 WD40

and ofcourse the sz 20/22 RS2

After lunch I went down to Zone 3 and fished from 12:30 - 2. I started at Suzy Hole and went down srteam from there. There was NO BODDY else fishing this area! The water is fast so weight is the key factor when fishing this section. I was able to land 16 with one bow being 18+". All thes fish fought hard then the ones in Zone 2. I only used a few flies:

San Juan worms

Mercury Phesant Tails

We then went back up to Zone 2 to finish the day off, plus my wife started fishing because the rain stoped. Again I used the same flies and were able to pick up another 15 or so fish. With out knowing the time. We spotted nice brown I made two cast to it and it took my fly on the second cast. After landing it, it ended up being in the 18" range. After releasing the fish, the horn sounded to end the day. What a way to end the day!

It was a great day with few fisherman and a lot of fish landed. Also thanks to my wife for going with me. We had a very good day together.

Great report. Thanks for the details.

It's always good when (management) has a good time too.

The only good line is a tight line

I was also at Bennett on Friday. Fished from about 9:45-2:45 and caught an even 30 rainbows and one small brown.

When I arrived, it was tough to find a spot in Zone 1 without crowding anyone. The stretch from the spring to the Holland dam was crowded, as was the area around the two jetties above the waterfall. I ended up fishing just below the Holland Dam in the fast, deep water and caught sveral there, most on size 20 white midge and small scuds. I had one very nice rainbow on for 20 seconds or so that would have gone several pounds, but broke my line! Around 11 I moved to zone 2 in the hatchery outlet area. Fished for a while and caught a few, but left as two older gentleman were about to get into a fist fight over who was fishing in who's spot. Note to the guy smoking the cigar: You were in the wrong....you waded right in front of him!

About 1:00 or so I walked down to the Suzy Hole in Zone 3 and caught the heck out of them! There were times when I was catching on every cast! Fished until the wind started blowing and it got cold (and I got hungry).

Was that you in the Simms jacket fishing a hundred yards or so below me at the Suzy Hole flyfishmaster?

What dingdongs, fishing is supposed to be relaxing. They need to take a chill pill in the great outdoors.

BKB,

Yes, that was me below the Suzy hole at that time of day. That area is fun to fly fish in. I really like the faster water below Susy hole all the way down to the next big hole.

After fishing is Zone 3 at 2 PM, I went to the Z2 and fished the hatcher outlet and I remember see the big guy smoking the cigar. I guess I missed all the excitement. I only stay in the outlet for about 15 minutes.

Sorry I missed talking to you.
