Members ahineman Posted March 20, 2006 Members Posted March 20, 2006 We're keeping our boat at campbell point marina in shell knob this year and I'm wanting to try some fishing this season. Can anyone out there point me in the right direction in that part of the lake? I'll chase pretty much anything that swims, except Missouri bonefish. Would really like to target some wallys and then some LM and SM bass. Any help is greatly appreciated!
SKMO Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 Ahineman - Now that is a wide open question and hard to answer. Can you provide more info as to the time of year you plan on fishing, type of boat, level of experience, tackle you have, etc. First off suggestion would be to forget the walleye thing. They are here but will be hard to connect with on purpose. Lots of good advice to be had here at a reasonable reate (free) but to best address your question and avoid costly keystrokes (joke) plese provide more background info. Man I love these parenthesis things (they come in handy). (())()()( SKMO "A True Fisherman with a Rod in His hand, and a Tug on the Line, would not Trade His Position for the Throne of Any King"
Members petertherock Posted March 21, 2006 Members Posted March 21, 2006 SKMO IS RIGHT! I don't know why people want to bother with the walleye in the Rock. While they exist they are elusive in our lake! Stick to the bass and crappie, especially on that end of the lake! Just give us more information please! I know when you get hungry, just pull up and tie off at the Pizza Hut dock(that is if it's still there). The walk up the bluff, will be good to stretch your legs after being in your boat all day. The bluegill hangiong off the dock like pepperoni the best! petertherock
Members ahineman Posted March 25, 2006 Author Members Posted March 25, 2006 I guess my question was pretty open ended. But the problem is, my approah is open ended. I have plenty of tackle and experience with bass and crappie. However, I havent' fished the clear water of the rock before so i know my strategy has to change (at least for bass). I'll be down there in a couple weeks for the first time and then probably about 1-2 times per month thereafter. I know April-May is probably some of the best (easiest) fishing, right? As for a boat, we've got a cruiser so I'll probably just be using my little 10' fishin boat and/or renting a small tracker from campbell point for a few hours here and there. If I get lucky, I might persuad a buddy to tow his bass boat down there in April... All I'm looking for is a little guidance on where/when to begin. And yes, Peter...the 'hut is still there along with some awfully mean steaks at "Steak Inn" on the other side of the bridge. Thanks in advance for the help!
SKMO Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 My first response would be that if you are in a 10' boat you had better be very selective about where you launch and very careful on the water. You can run into problems from wind, boat wakes, and literally getting run over. Seriously. One place you might consider putting in at is Big Bay Campground which is real close to Campbell Point. You will see the sign for Big Bay recreation area about halfway between the Stone/Barry county line sign and the convenience store on YY hwy. You can launch the smaller boat there, and Big Bay has good fishing for about everything. Another advantage is that you are more or less sheltered from W or S winds if you launch here and stay toward the bank. Members petertherock Posted March 26, 2006 Members Posted March 26, 2006 Howdy, I figured the Hut was still there. But Steak Inn I knew was still there, but now you're talkin'. I would consider with your little boat makin'a trip down to the Roaring River or Eagle Rock area, either pulling it behind your cruiser or toting by vehicle. SKMO is on target too about Big Bay Campground. On the tackle side just go light meaning 6 - 8lb line, a good stiff but light spinning rod, and throw the grub or swimmin minnow. Try the old jerkbait as well(here you may want to go medium/light with a baitcaster, but no more than 10lb. line. Use flurocarbon line it's the best, second choice would be some green mono. Just think small but large, in other words most of the guys throw 1/4 oz. jig heads with their grubs, use 1/8 oz., fish it slower, swimmin' it and fish it more deliberately and you'll catch more fish! Fish the main and secondary points. You'll do alright if you just get your line in the water. Good fishin, petertherock
Members ahineman Posted March 26, 2006 Author Members Posted March 26, 2006 Thanks, guys. Can you tell me approximately when the crappie and bass spawns begin up around Shell Knob?
