timsfly Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Windy as all get out, but the fish were biting great, caught a 3lb, a 5lb and a 6lb rainbow this morning, caught a bunch on small glo-balls, and the 3 and 5 lbers on a orange san juan worm, and I caught the 6lber on a #16 apricot glo-ball. Caught a lot of small fish on the san juans also, and a few on the brown beetles, and a few on a small purple squirrel hair fly, with a bit of purple flash in the tail. I hope this afternoon is just as good. Fished 6X all morning, the fish seem to be getting line sensitive, I have been getting away with 4X a lot the last few weeks, but yesterday afternoon I switched to 5X and did real well, went to the 6X this morning and did even better, so I guess it is time to go light again. MOBass Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Can you educate me on how you are fishing the glo balls? I haven't had much success with them.
timsfly Posted December 18, 2008 Author Posted December 18, 2008 I don't use an indicator, I sight fish, so really you need to have a good pair of polarized glasses, brown or amber lens work best for me. I don't use weight unless I have to, I like to throw an egg into riffles and let it float and sink as natural as possible, and I watch for a fish to take the fly, and then you set the hook, and you have a fish, I fish eggs because they are easy to see, and the fish love them. I tie my eggs in sizes #4 down to a small #24 and I use them with beads, with out beads, some with glass beads, and some with plastic beads, I use the different beads, to get different sink rates and sometimes just for the color. Glass beads are great, they add a bit of weight and the colors you can get them in sometimes really work well. I use tungsten beads alot, when trying to get deep, or when fish a real fast riffle, keeps the egg down but will let it roll along the rivers bottom, when fishing very slow water I use very little or no weight, and I'll cast it upstream a bit and let it sink slowly, and when it gets to the bottom, I'll lift my rod tip ever so slightly and let the egg come off the bottom and hopefully it will bounce and roll real slowly. If it gets to the bottom and sticks, you'll have to lift a bit harder, and yes I break several off each day, if you fish them right you'll hang on the bottom once in awhile. I use 7X or 6X in real slow water, and if I can get away with it I'll use 5X or sometimes even 4X at times in faster water. Flourocarbon will effect your sink rate, you egg will sink faster, with regular tippet, your egg will sink slower, I love flouro, but at times the regular tippet will let your egg fish better. I hope that answers your question, I don't explain things all that well, I'm better at showing it on the river, so I hope I didn't make as clear as mud Tim Homesley 23387 st. hwy 112 Cassville, Mo 65625 Roaring River State park Tim's Fly Shop www.missouritrout.com/timsflyshop
