DaddyO Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Spent the weekend at Marval and just fished that area on Saturday and a couple of hours Sunday. Being new to this fly tying thing, I wanted to try a couple of flies that I tied. I tied some pink marabou on a 1/80th jig head as one fly/jig and I tied a Bead Head Pheasant tail with a Fire Orange thread thorax (Hot Spot) instead of the Peacock Herl. Caught a half dozen on the Pink Marabou and an even dozen on the Hot spot PT before calling it quits on Saturday. Went back out Sunday for a couple of hours and caught another half dozen on the Hot spot PT and then left for home. DaddyO We all make decisions; but, in the end, our decisions make us.
Members Trout Predator Posted January 12, 2009 Members Posted January 12, 2009 I was out there today for the first time in a while. Spent most of the day just checking out the river, seeing whats different, and getting my casting arm back. Started up by the dam @ the first turn in. Started with a red San Juan worm that did nothing, then switched to a zebra midge I tied with a little peacock herl right at the head. It was about the only thing I was catching them on consistently on today. After a while I decided it was time to go down stream to Watts, walked around there checking it out. Very easy to find with the new blacktopped road. Then I went down to Marvals to finish the day. Last time I was down there was when the parking lot by the river was under water. Anyway the river flow has changed a bit in some places. Biggest difference I could see was the lack of the tall grass. Made it real easy to get way down stream. didn't do mush fishing there I was just checking out the river and looked for some good holes. Ended up fishing way down the river where all the log jams are. Left when it got dark. Overall it was a good day just being out on the river. Saw plenty of midges on the river and even a mayfly. DaddyO, I also tie allot of hot spots on my flies. My box is full of hot spotted nymphs with lots of lead and tungsten.
Mikey Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 I keep reading about the Watts area. I tried finding it once when I was up there and ended up at a fence that proclaimed in no uncertain terms to go away. under penalty of 12ga lead poisoning. If anyone has a way to locate it for me on Google Earth I would be much appreciated. Mr. Bearden I'm sure you can. I might want to fish there this next month. Mikey Each time I buy a new fly............ My wife gives me the same look........ I give her when she buys another purse... ..............................
Zach Bearden Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Mikey, the easiest way for me to explain it would be. If you come out of the road from the dam and take a left there, you'll go about a 1/2 mile and you'll see an old diner on the right side of the road. Take a left on this dirt road. If you go past Souter Gravel then you've gone too far. I could show you some time if you'd like. Just give me a holler before you come down. DaddyO, were you the one in the Red hoodie Jacket thing at Marval Sunday? "Its clearly Bree time baby!" Member: 2009 U.S. Youth Fly-Fishing Team. Mikey Mikey, As you are going towards the Dam from Gore, turn right onto E0990 rd. It is a black top road. Drive all the way to the end of the road and it will end in a parking lot by the river. Get out and walk down river and you will find an access point that allows you down to the river without having to climb like a goat. You can use Google Maps with the Satellite turned on and labels turned on to see the road if you look for Gore, OK and zoom in. DaddyO We all make decisions; but, in the end, our decisions make us.
Members Trout Predator Posted January 13, 2009 Members Posted January 13, 2009 http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=35....645542476909528 This link should show a Google maps street view of the area right before the turn. Driving like your going from Gore to the dam its the new blacktopped road just to the right of the old Phillips sign. Hope this helps and hope the link works.
Mikey Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Helped greatly. I forget about the street level view sometimes in google earth. Planning on taking my wife's youngest brother up there at the end of the month. His father just passed away Sat and I think it might get his mind off of stuff. He's never been trout fishing and likely hasn't ever worn waders. I'll likely have my hands full with this 15 yr old. Each time I buy a new fly............ My wife gives me the same look........ I give her when she buys another purse... ..............................
