Hi all - I've been looking to updating the sonar on my boat. I had been all jacked up and excited about getting Humminbird SI for my boat, but gotta say that enthusiasm has been softened a bunch after reading the Yahoo forum. Either there's lots of folks that aren't real bright or this setup has the possibility of being is pretty darn complex. This being said, I was fortunate enough to fish with Eric Prey this past weekend and was really impressed with his 10.4" display on the Lowrance sonar.

There's some great deals to be had on the existing Lowrance sonars as they are discontinued for the new HDS units come out. Given this, anyone have a giant 10.4" display and regret the decision? I'd appreciate your thoughts.

tnx

edwin

the humminbird is a new technology that lowrance does not have. I have a 522 and it is a really good sonar unit .A larger screen is nice but thats all it is , a bigger picture. the side finder is capable of "seeing " way out to the side and you can clearly see what you are looking at. I can idle down a bluff and see exactly where the best trees are you can find the structure on a gravel point in one pass. the images are amazing and the gps is easy to use. you can spoy something far from your boat ,mark it and go right back to it very easily. here are some screenshots from sunday. you be the judge.

it was my second time out with the new toy. i think I still have to fine tune it a little but it is fairly simple to use. i had no idea any of this stuff was exactly where it is.The log on the gravel explains why we always get hooked up in that area. In the past we would pull up on the bank and start fishing parallel to shore now I can clearly see what was holding the fish. In my opinion if you are fishing a tourney and your competition has this tool, you may be at a disadvantage. I can show you thepics when i first saw the boat and log.you can see the cursor on the log as I marked it the first time very easy to navigate back to the spot to take a closer look. Its hard to tell if there are any fish on it in the pic,but Im sure they will be back in the spring.

edwin, there is no big deal with the setup.. This one just makes no sense to me at all? I guess their is just alot slow folks out there with technology. And the new Lowrance HD stuff, well HB has had this for over two years now with the 2D vertical units it's just 200/83 mhz dual transducer with the premium mapping from navonics. Even with a 5" screen or the 10.5 inch secreen it should not matter, I've used them both... The yahoo site is for help, and alot of people need help!!! Heck I will help you with the setup if you are that worried!!

Well good luck in finding one for what you like..

Hey Edwin,

Not that you need to hear it from me again but I love my Lowrance for vertical fishing. As far as the size being in the way I haven't had a problem and niether has anyone else I know that have them. Of course most of us are fishing out of 20'+ boats. On your smaller rig I would suggest getting a ram mount like you saw on mine that way you have the flexability to swing the screen out of the way of the deck, just remember to lay the graph down when you are running.

As far as the HB units, like I told you I plan on purchasing one later this year for my console, I think the technology is awsome for searching ad locating structure, cover, etc.... But to paraphrase Charlton Heston..... They can have my Lowrance when they pry it out of my cold dead hands..... Or maybe .....get your stinkin paws off me you darn dirty ape.. I never know which quote to use.

Let me know if I can help in any way.

thanks for the replies, gents. I was a little short on detail when I put together the original post. This unit would be for the bow of my boat. I completely agree the SI unit would be fantastic for the console but I haven't yet seen where a TM mounted transducer was the way to go for a SI unit...maybe I'm just reading the wrong stuff.

I looked at the units again today while at BPS in Atlanta. Whatever I end up getting for the bow, it will have at least the 8" screen.

Oh, and no, the budget doesn't have room for a new console and bow unit :)

edwin when you get ready for the SI unit just drop me an email I wiould love to help you out.. Now as far as the front unit, I used my 957 Humminbird unit with an 8" screen and it works jusr fine. I'm looking at upgrading to the 11" unit for the front myself.. Not sure if it will help that much for you but it will for guys like me and eric.. Also when you get a chance stop by the humminbird web site and look over their 2-d units for vertical fishing, I love mine and feel they are much better with technology than anyone else, really ahead of there time, everyone else is just now catching up.

Have fun and good fishing

Well, I ended up with the LCX-112c...found a deal that I just couldn't pass up. I'll go HB on my console unit down the road but this unit shoud fit the bow quite nicely.

Don -looking forward to our April trip to see the SI in action.

Thanks to all for the input...I truly appreciate it.
