As you know they may be hot on one fly, then the next day ignore it. A lot of it comes from fishing pressure I think. Try the stand by flies this time of year: egg patterns, San Juan worms, scuds, sowbugs, wooly buggers and micro jigs.

If the water is stained or has quite a bit of current (usually more this time of the year), you usually do better fishing on the bottom, make sure you are deep enough.

If you are fly fishing, the entire area is good. They have a catch and release section. Some BIG fish are in there and usually less crowded. I really like the way things are set up there. Then you also have all the river to fish. That is far less crowded and you can find some good spots in there also - it is the bait or anything goes section.

There are some big fish in the C&R section, and some good deserted riffles in the bait section. And the stupid fish taper off quickly outside of the park, as do the fishermen.

Montauk has a little of everything to offer...you should find water that suites what you like. Most of the deeper pools are above the hwy. bridge you come in on and below the bridge more shallow water for the most part.

Remember if you fish below the park it's a blue ribbon area...1 18" fish allowed and artificial only, no soft plastics.

I know I have said it before...in the park don't forget the ole 'Pellet Fly'...after all it's what they have eaten their entire lives.

I don't fly fish much but one other fly fisherman on the boards said tying the pellet fly was like matching the hatch, sort of, lol.

good luck

My friends say I'm a douche bag ??

In my humble opinion, Montauk is the best stretch of freestone trout water in the state. I've done well on egg patterns, marabou jigs, and woolly buggers when I've fished the fly section there. I prefer the last quarter mile of the fly-only catch and keep water, but it's all good. Also, in the anything goes stretch, a few hundred yards below the waterfall that seperates the two zones there is a pretty and secluded run, that is far enough from the road that it doesn't recieve direct stockings, or much fishing pressure. I lost a massive brown trout there a while back that must have migrated from the Blue Ribbon Area, and I always get some rainbows that act more wild than in the areas where they are stocked directly. Have fun.

OTF,

If you are refering to the strech down behind the raceways and lodge there are 2 or 3 stocking points along there.

I believe there are a total of 27 stocking points in the park that are (suppose to be) used every night...IF the staff does their job.

I'm not too sure we are referring to the same stretch of stream... The part I am referring to is in the wood, a ways the road, so it would be pretty hard to stock. But I could be wrong.
