Key Largo

I am headed to the Keys in a couple of weeks and trying to decide whether to take the fly rod. I am going to be with the wife and won't have time or money to hire a guide. Would it be worth taking the fly rod to make a few casts while hanging out on the beach? I have seen where you can rent kayaks for backcountry float trips. Has anyone fished in this area without a guide? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
