Members Poke 'Em Posted March 12, 2009 Members Posted March 12, 2009 What is the best flow for fishing for stripers below Zink? Also, how long does it take for the water to get from Keystone to Zink when they start generating? Thanks!
fly2fish Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I have found between 3500cfs to 6000cfs is best. I was told it took 3500cfs to get them to come upriver and anything over 6000csf they could get over the low water dam. I am not sure how long it takes for the water to reach there but the fish have to come from farther down river to get to the low water dam. I would make sure that it has been running several hours before hitting it. If it has been running all night then early in the morning is best. F2F
Evolution Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 The generation usually starts from Keystone Dam, which is about 8 miles away so it takes quite some time to reach zink dam but be prepared to seek higher ground once the light go off. Don't really know about best flow for stripers but from the reports seen here, low water flow gives you a better chance of hooking up a striper since you aren't just limited to the shoreline and bridge, but have a chance of wade out there to get away from the crowd. Wading can be best at anything below 500 cfs.
Hopper Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 What is the best flow for fishing for stripers below Zink? If you are going to fly fish and are going to wade, anything over 2000 CFS makes it very tough. I've fished when only 100 CFS was running and have caught stripers. Water temp is what triggers spawning once the temp starts staying above 50 you'll find more fish. I start fishing middle of Feb and catch fish, you can check some of my older posts. OKFlyFisher44 Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 Last time I went there was no generation at all...plenty of wading options on both sides of the river. I only got into a few stripers but caught lots of sand bass n' hybrids. This warm weather we've been having shoulda started to bring up the water temp and get the fish active...until today when it freaking snowed! I'm going to try and sneak off down to Zink on Monday afternoon if the generation is right...drop me a message if anyone wants to go! Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...
