mizzouflyfisher Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 Got down to Montauk yesterday (3/28), and had most of the stream to myself. Midweek is so nice. The water was up quite a bit and fairly colored. Made sight fishing slightly more difficult. Caught several fish on sz. 18 wd-40 and others on a sz. 18 beadhead midge in various colors. There were also some nice caddis coming off along with a smaller mayfly. I fished a sz 16 elk hair caddis with a size 18 adams trailed behind. Both worked. Ended up catching around 40, biggest was a 21" brown. All in all a great day on the water, not it's time to go get the bass gear out for this weekend. Mizzouflyfisher
Don Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 Nice to hear you got a brownie. I hear folks say they caught a brownie out of Roaring River many times I'm there. I've fished state parks Roaring River and Bennett quite a few times since 1976 and never have seen a brown landed. Don May I caught you a delicious bass.
mcp633 Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 I fish Montauk quite a bit and have only caught one brown. It was about 12" and was right down by the wire. I figure it was an escapee from downstream. Kyle If you don't stand behind our troops, please feel free to stand in front of them
Kansas Fly Fisher Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 I caught a 4 1/2 pound brown at Bennett last year site fishing a white jig. Born to Fish, Forced to Work KSMEDIC.COM
10pointer Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 mizzou did you catch that brown in the park, or in the blue ribbon area, did you keep or release it? Ive caught quite a few big browns outside the park and never kept any, including one of them monsters that hangs out (or used to last year) just below the wire. Ive caught a few browns in the park but none over a pound or two. im heading down this saturday then, friday thru sunday next weekend. I just tied up a bunch of stuff last night so im excited!
mizzouflyfisher Posted April 7, 2006 Author Posted April 7, 2006 Just saw your question 10pointer. I caught the brown in the park, up in the catch and release area. I caught three browns that day, 2 were on back to back casts, the 21" and an 18". I also saw one that would have probably gone 23/24. It blew up on a zonker, literally slashed at the surface as soon as the zonker hit the water. Montauk has a higher number of browns than Bennet, but I have caught a couple dozen at Bennett over the years. Both parks are stocking larger numbers of browns. Also, the only place I've kept a trout over the past 5 years is taneycomo. It's a pain in the butt dragging trout around and the girlfriend hates fish. I'm hoping the girlfriend might want to go down there tomorrow. If not, I may have to ditch her. Mizzouflyfisher
