Thom Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Its official! I just got my email itinearary from expedia. I am going in August to hook up with my brother in Jackson Hole and points beyond for 4 days of Power fishing. I am excited and just wanted to share. Any one who might know, Id appreciate any ideas on flys equip etc. I will follow with a report Redbird: I envy you. A few years back I spent 2 weeks working on a Horse ranch located on the Wind River. Every morning and evening I walked down to the river which was just a few miles down from the reservior and fished. Mostly brookies but I also go to go on the nearby reservation and fish a deeper stretch below some huge rocks and riffles. I really had a ball with mostly Browns. It was on private land and only the owners fished there. The Ranch was just out of Jackson hole about 15 miles and was called "Early Ranch" They have since moved their operation to the panhandle of Florida. There are lots of streams and accesses all around Jackson Hole that are eaily accessed. Beautiful country. Lots of luck and tight lines on your trip. Thom Thom Harvengt
redbird Posted March 17, 2009 Author Posted March 17, 2009 Thanks Thom, and FFM. I think I know what part of the Wind River you are talking about on the Res. Is it Wind River Canyon? There are some huge browns there and big rainbows too. It is big fast water with huge bolders and not much backcast room. Ive fished there once before, and my brother hits it frequently. It is one of the spots we will hit. My brother lives in Lander and we are going to work our way back from Jackson Hole to Lander Hitting his/our favorite spots in between, and possibly a day or two around Lander which has some great spots as well. Hopefully we will get in some big water big fish, and high altitude streams full of cuttys and brookies. I love it either way and am really looking forward to the trip. Thanks Again, Bill Im not a Cardinals fan, but I am a Cardinal. If you know me you know what that means.
Members HeavyC Posted May 6, 2009 Members Posted May 6, 2009 I might suggest the Popo Agie then! TONS of access and some untouched water to be sure! My personal best brownie ever was out of this little river right before Hudson as you come from Lander. (HE was 34" and approx 14#! ) There is an access point there for the state and the reservation, though to drive across you have to be out by 3:30pm I believe, but you can always walk-in. I ahve managed several brownies close to that in the canyon too; several over 32" before. None of my bows have broken 27" in the canyon. Though after The Wedding of The Waters once you leave the canyon and it turns into state control and the river becomes The Big Horn, it ain't too shabby either! Will be spending 11 days on the reservation this summer! Plan on trying to hit it all! Including 4 days high country! Boysen for the eyes, The Popozhia (Popo Agie) & Wind river for the brownies, Bull Lake for the mackinaw & ling, and high country for cutthroats and hopefully a 'native' golden trout! Man it is going to be an adventure! Good luck! ...and watch for grizz! HC Out! redbird Posted May 7, 2009 Author Posted May 7, 2009 I wish I had 11 days to spend out there. The Popo Agie and the WRC are my brothers 2 regular spots. We will hit them for sure. Thanks and good luck on your trip also! "Sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear, he eats you." Im not a Cardinals fan, but I am a Cardinal. If you know me you know what that means.

Thanks and good luck on your trip also! "Sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear, he eats you." I spent a month fishing the mountain creeks of Wyoming and Montana once. A great time. I never tied on anything but a #12 black woolly bugger when fly fishing (I mostly spin fished) , because thats all I needed. Those brookies, cutts, and rainbows in the mountain creeks are very easy to catch. Way easier than in any trout stream out here, even the trout parks.
brittsnbirds Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 I was up in Idaho last year around the same time. The locals recommended dark colored hopper patterns in the riffles. Caught tons of Cutts and bows, mostly small. However I did catch my largest Cutthroat approx 24". Almost too big for my net.
redbird Posted June 20, 2009 Author Posted June 20, 2009 In the summer my brother fishes a hopper dropper pattern, and catches a lot on both. They call it the twinkie and the coconut out there. Ive tied up hoppers in a few shades and sizes, lots of stimulators, lots of nymphs, adams, quills, buggers, and streamers. The anticipation is mounting! Im not a Cardinals fan, but I am a Cardinal. If you know me you know what that means.

Mt biggest is 18 in from McClellams on the Norfork. However, I've been picking up several 15in cutbows at Taney lately. Don May Don May I caught you a delicious bass.
