OKFlyFisher44 Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 From what I understand...the River Parks area doesn't close till 11:00 at night right? Sooo, could we technically do some night fishing at Zink if the generation was good till that time? When we used to fish for white bass on grand lake when I was younger, we'd murder fish till 1 or 2 in the morning. I would think the bigger stripers would really be actively feeding at night...don't ya think? I could be dead wrong...don't know much about the behavior on stripers to be honest with you guys. I'd think throwing some black/purple clousers at night could possibly yield some big fish. Obviously, there's no way I'd fish it by myself at night...no way! Anyways...what do you guys think? Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...

OKFlyFisher44 Posted March 18, 2009 Author Posted March 18, 2009 Why? Wading safety? Concern about criminals? Both...haha! Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...
hoglaw Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Are you used to catching white bass in the dark with such a subtle presentation? Seems to me that a clouser in that kind of current just wouldn't produce enough disturbance to get noticed unless you bonked one in the nose. A fat colorado blade 1oz spinnerbait, maybe. I've caught plenty of trout at night on sight presentations, but the water wasn't moving as much as what you guys are fishing.
OKFlyFisher44 Posted March 18, 2009 Author Posted March 18, 2009 That's a good point. Its tough to say. If they weren't generating any water...I'd think it'd be similiar to fishing Taneycomo. The 2 spillways would be kinda like the outlets at Taney where as the other stretches where the water slows down quite a bit at Zink would be similiar to like the slower shallower water below Rebar. I could be dead wrong. I would think you could fish Clousers on the swing in most of the water...and then strip it in at different speeds in the slower water or the deeper pools. That's just how I think it would work. Some bigger streamer patterns would work too or maybe some big popper style flies... I don't know...just curious as to what everyone thought. I think it could be done... Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...
hoglaw Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Certainly not trying to discourage anyone. Night wade-fishing in the Arkansas river sounds like a helluva time. Who knows what you'll hang in there at night. I'm just thinking you might need to go BIG with your flies. McClellan's here in Fayetteville sells a fly called a "wiggle minnow." Not sure how common it is elsewhere. It's a foam body that moves like a crankbait when stripped, then floats back up to the surface. Seems like it might create a bit more disturbance like a muddler.
Hopper Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Of course they are not shutting down untill 11:00 tonight, but I'm game anytime. I'll keep an eye on SWPA generation times and post when it looks good for a night of fly casting The gods do not deduct from man's allotted span the hours spent in fishing.
OKFlyFisher44 Posted March 19, 2009 Author Posted March 19, 2009 That's about normal...they've running water 24/7! I'm game for some night fishing if they ever shut down the water enough that there's prime wade fishing. I think it could be very good... All of us that live locally in/around the Tulsa area need to try and schedule a night that all of us show up to fish. Kinda like what some of the guys do at Taney. It would be cool to put a face to some of the names we see on here! You can also watch the USGS stream flow website for current water conditions. It updates every hour and gives several different readings like cfs, water temp, etc. USGS Stream Flow - Zink Dam Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Members Two handed Posted March 20, 2009 Members Posted March 20, 2009 night time is a great time... Clousers the same way you fish them in the day in the deeper wholes. Deceivers in the faster stuff I'v done this many times, its just like it is in daylight some time its good some time its bad the good thing is at night you own the place look dad both hands
Members ColeM. Posted April 18, 2009 Members Posted April 18, 2009 I am up for this if they ever stop running water! I think getting a group of guys together would be a great idea.
