Hello all, I am very happy that I found this website. My wife and I are both originally from Oklahoma, however we are both stationed at Fort Leonard Wood. I am a very avid outdoorsman to include hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, floating and boating. This site seems like a very informative site and everyone really seems to want to help each other. I am new to river fishing as most of my fishing in Oklahoma was ponds and lakes, but I did pursue various species to include largemouth, crappie, bluegill, catfish, stripers and sand bass (white bass). I have dabbled in fly fishing but just a cheap Wal-Mart rig (I can hear everyone cringing right now) with poppers for bass in ponds. I am looking to get either a square stern canoe that I can mount a trolling motor on or a 14ft jon boat that I will mount a trolling motor on and possibly a small outboard in the 5-10 horsepower range. I am sure that I will get out and explore a lot of places in Missouri but the main areas that I will be fishing will be the Gasconade, Osage Fork, Big Piney and a few small lakes and ponds. I am sure that most of my fishing will stick to the Pulaski, Phelps, Laclede, Miller, Maries and Texas counties area. Any advice on boat choices as well as tactics, tackle and gear for the area would be greatly appreciated. Also any advice that you think would help out a newcomer to the area would be great. Thank you.

Good luck. You are right in the middle of Missouri's best trout and smallmouth bass fishing. If you're interested in fly fishing for trout and smallmouth bass, I would reccomend Little Piney Creek, although it isn't often floatable. Mostly a wade stream, but it's near you and a lot of fun to fish.

Welcome to the OAF! (you know this means you are officially an OAF, right? LOL)

My name is Cricket, I am one of the Laclede area smallie hunters, I use the type of setup you want (16ft river john, 5HP motor, 40lb thrust troller, etc.. Perfect for our Ozarks rivers) and I know just what type of fishing you like to do...

There a TONS of places right around us here, save my number (below) if you have ANY quick questions about ANY river around here.. You are really close to the upper Current.. It's a beautiful river with some deep holes and good sized fish. Jack fork isn't far, the Niangua (my homewaters) is fantastic for a vast variety of fish. Smallies, largemouth, crappie, goggle eye, trout.. Even cats downstream from here...

If you are interested in picking up a free seat in my boat, lemme know. I am open on Sundays and Wednesdays and am always happy to have someone in the front of the Boat.

Again, welcome!

Welcome to the forum. Looking forward to your posts.

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.

The two best times to go fishing? When it is raining and when it is not.
