Members Cunningham Posted March 19, 2009 Members Posted March 19, 2009 Let me first say, they weren't called on me!!!! Since the water was up yesterday and it was so nice, I went kayaking at the Wave Park. When I put in, I noticed a guy below the fishing the dam in shorts and no shirt. No waders, just shorts and shoes. Well apparently, when I was downstream at PSO, he fell in a few times, and passer by's on the bridge called 911 because someone was drowning. By chance I paddled up to the ramp just as this guy did the walk of shame up to the TPD and TFD. To make a long story short, the cops were pissed. They couldn't believe this guy was out there, alone, in 55 degree water in just shorts. They also threatened to call the game warden because this guy wasn't carrying a fishing license. Anyway, no tickets were given. Just an FYI that if someone calls 911 because they think the water is unsafe or whatnot, they will respond in force, and they won't be happy. The kayaking was good too....I should have taken a picture of the commotion, but I did get a good picture at the wave...
creek wader Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 All that aside, Did he catch any fish? .. Just kidding. .. Wading in something that looks like your pic, is pure insanity, even in warm water. wader
Danoinark Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Neat picture. How long is that stretch of whitewater? Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"

Terry Beeson Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 ...Well apparently, when I was downstream at PSO, he fell in a few times... Reminds me of an Irish joke... Brenda O'Malley is home as usual, making dinner, when Tim Finnegan arrives at her door. "Brenda, may I come in?" he asks. "I've somethin' to tell ya." "Of course you can come in, you're always welcome, Tim. But where's me husband?" "That's what I'm here to be tellin' ya, Brenda. There was an accident down at the Guinness brewery..." "Oh, God no!" cries Brenda. "Please don't tell me..." "I must, Brenda. Your husband Seamus is dead and gone. I'm sorry." Brenda reached a hand out to her side, found the arm of the rocking chair by the fireplace, pulled the chair to her and collapsed into it. She wept for many minutes. Finally she looked up at Tim. "How did it happen, Tim?" "It was terrible, Brenda. Seamus fell into a vat of Guinness Stout and drowned." "Oh my dear Jesus! But you must tell me true, Tim. Did he at least go quickly?" "Well, Brenda... no." "No?" "Fact is, he got out three times to pee." OKFlyFisher44 Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 When I was out there last sunday, there was 2 guys out in the middle of the river on the little island up close to the dam fishing...with the river rolling at 4000 cfs!! It blew my mind. I walked downriver a little ways...see if I could maybe get out on the river a little ways but yeah, there is no way! They walked out there after I'd tried to get out there. They got out there in tennis shoes, mesh shorts, and t-shirt...I dont know how. I mean...there was some spots that was around belly deep that is where they'd crossed but it was really iffy. If the water had come up anymore...they'd been swimming back to the bank. Some people are just really ballsy...or stupid... rps Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 That low water dam was built while James Inhofe was mayor of Tulsa. Oddly it was completed just a year or two after the low water dam upstream at Sand Springs was demolished because of the number of drownings at the site. Something about those kinds of dams attracts people with decision making difficulties. I always have thought Tulsa should build the Inhofe Memorial Cemetery at the dam location. No one would have to take the victims very far. My relatives who still live in Tulsa tell me the Riverparks system is getting a complete rework in hopes of duplicating the success Jenks has had with its Riverwalk complex. When I was a boy, the river stank from the refineries on the west side and the beast was out of its banks nearly every year. My how time changes things.
Evolution Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 4000 cfs...Holy balls. Some people just don't understand what those flashing light mean. When those lights are on and you are looking above from the bridge, it seems like the water looks wade able b/c those waves by the ramp make it like there are no/little water going through but in reality, there are some pretty steep drop offs and very slick at times. No fish is worth dying for but "when in Rome". Speaking of water level, does Zink have a certain pattern that it tends to follow when it will shut off/ turn on or does it just do so randomly?
OKFlyFisher44 Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 So far there is no pattern...AT ALL! Its been pretty much FULL THROTTLE from the dam this past month or so. The last couple of days...it hasn't got below 4000cfs when I checked it earlier on USGS.GOV with their current streamflow tables... Its pretty ridiculous....it's projected that there will be no generation tomorrow from 1-6 pm but who knows if that will hold true and if the river will drop low enough at Zink to allow for good wading conditions. I'm going to take my gear with me to work and watch the streamflow at work. If it gets below 2000 cfs, I'm going to go check it out...see if I can't get a few casts in!
