Members rubicon31 Posted March 20, 2009 Members Posted March 20, 2009 am i correct, does the little sugar run thru bella vista? is so has anyone had much success with smallies? looks like it could have some potential? thanks
Zack Hoyt Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Yes, yes, and yes. I have fished a majority of the creek. Low water hurts it, but there are some good pools. Below the Dam. Behind the POA building. Behind the Sonic. Behind the Animal shelter. Give a shout if your going to head that way. I havent fished it since last spring. remi74 Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 I have caught some decent sized largemouth below the spillway nearest the memorial. There can be decent fishing - I fish it everynow and then but end up using rooster tails instead of usual fly fishing gear. Some great bluegills in there. Low water does affect fishing. I fished way out east of Bella Vista and caught some large kentuckies but that's if you are adventurous. I will fish for anything - look for sucker spawn too. Lake is really low right now - I would use popping bugs on lake if fly fishing. Holler at me too if you go out - I was just out Tuesday - water is cold - fishing is slow. Just rained all night but I will fish it in a few days or so . . . but the spillway closest to highway is busted and water is not being controlled - may be a week or so . . . . keep an eye on it.
Zack Hoyt Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 I fished above the lake and below the dams on Saturday. I was worried about how the recent trail construction affected the waters. The gravel ahd changed around quite a bit and lost some habitat. Nice deep run from the South side of the wakling bridge running south along the west side of the creek. There were a few smallies held up in the DEEPEST portions. Wind really picked up, so I headed below the dam. Not a ton of luck. Water is still pretty cold for much movement. Dropped a crawdad pattern along the bottom and got a few very slow hits, but nothing hooked up. Talked to quite a few people around fishing......most were mentioning catching a smallmouth and cooking it. I hope people realize the slow growth rate of these fish. Anywho, I had a good time getting out and cant wait for warmer weather. Zack Hoyt OAF Contributor Flies, Lies, and Other Diversions

I fish it in the summer..right outside of jane, we had a few 75+ fish days mostly smallmouth in the 10-12 inch range.. and a few in the 14inch + range..a friend of mine caught one close to 4 pounds there last year...i use small tubes and craws mostly ...its a great creek to wade...

Fishing is decent in bella vista but if you want to get into the bigger ones you are better off fishing the parts up in mo. Those areas hold really nice fish ( and a dung load of snakes also so be careful those snakes dont seem to be too afraid of people )
remi74 Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Checked out Little Sugar in MO yesterday. Running pretty swift. I have 2 access points. If someone has permission or something let me know - having heck of time fishing from certain spot. I only fish by myself . . . . in certain waters. Looking to head to Big Sugar soon. If anyone wants to hook up on Little or Big let me know - I'll use spinning or fly rod. No matter.
