Members BigD1030 Posted March 29, 2009 Members Posted March 29, 2009 I am thinking about buying a boat in the near future, and dont know what to buy. This will be my first boat, and I wanted to see what everyone has to say. I do alot of fly fishing on taneycomo and the white river, and might be moving to montana in a year. I also do some bass fishing and smallmouth fishing. I have been looking at some drift boats, they seem like they would work best for fly fishing, but was wondering how it would be if I took it onto a lake. Like I said most of my fishing will be on rivers, but the ocasional lake outing. Also has anyone put a motor on a drift boat if you guys think this is a good route. Let me know what your opinions are, should I go with something other than a drift boat.

rps Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 First boat, river and lake fishing? Consider a tiller steer aluminium by Xpress or G3. 17 or 18 feet with a 50 or 60hp will be rough water worthy for lakes, fairly shallow running for rivers, stable to stand in, and not expensive when compared to regular bass boats. More river friendly would be a Supreme with a 15hp or a Carolina Skiff. However, both of those have limitations for lake fishing.
Bman Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Big D, For river fishing and shallow water running, have you considered a jet boat? There are several configurations. I don't know about Montana waters, but from running the upper mississippi for smallies, or Missouri shallow rivers, or Taney at no generation. Jets are awesome, if ya don't see it you probably won't hit it. And a foot operated troller. Works for me. The only good line is a tight line

Members BigD1030 Posted March 30, 2009 Author Members Posted March 30, 2009 Well Bman like I said this is my first boat, im not buying one tommorow but am actively looking. So if you had some suggestions I would appreciate them, I dont really know where to start. What kind of boat do you use, motor, length etc. If it helps I will usually be fishing with 2-3 people including myself, and most of my fishing will be on rivers but the ocasional smaller lake. Im not looking to spend a fortune, but I would like to get something that I will enjoy fishing out of.
Bman Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Big D, You might want to consider a used boat. In this economy there are quite a few decent buy's out there. It all depends on what your budget is. With 2-3 people including yourself, you don't want to be under powered. A wider boat with go more shallow than one more narrow. Example a 1756 ( 17 ft long X 56 inches wide) will run shallower than a 1752. The same with shorter or longer boats. This bears true with jet jonns, inboard or outboard. A jet john will have a transom of the correct height to set up a jet out board engine. Do a little research on River smallies.com under the motorized boat section. http://forums.riversmallies.com/forums/ind...hp?showforum=47 These guys are guru's when it comes to running skinny water with jets. Inboard, or outboard. You could look at the River Pro website under classifieds, http://riverpro-boats.com/component/option...nd,0/Itemid,48/ Regards, The only good line is a tight line
Members BigD1030 Posted March 30, 2009 Author Members Posted March 30, 2009 I appreciate all of the help Bman, and I am going to check out those websites. If you dont mind whenever I come up with an idea of what I want I will shoot you a message to see what you think.
FRENZEL Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 I would definitely go for an 18 foot or so semi v river jon. I like the center console but flyfishing may be easier with a side.. not sure. Also a jet would serve you well with what you want to use it for TRACY FRENZEL FRENZELS GUIDE SERVICE 417-699-2277 "ONE MORE CAST"
