Members Grant Miller Posted April 4, 2009 Members Posted April 4, 2009 I just got a St. Croix Avid 3 weight 7'9" 4 piece. It's pretty soft rod and I'm thinking Triangle Taper for it. What do you guys think? It will be a small stream special (Crane Creek look out!) so I'm not concerned about long casts and shooting line. Also, I have heard that TT's should be used on the next rod weight up from the line weight if the rod is soft (use a 5 TT on a soft 6). Should I get a 2wt TT for this rod? I love TT lines, and would recommend the TT4F on that rod. I fish an Orvis Superfine 1wt, which is a soft, full flex rod and I am using an older TT 2/3 on it with great success. I should also mention that I fish a WF1F and a DT1F on that rod as well. I use different lines for different conditions. TT lines are very light at the tip, so any additional weight you can get out for a short cast will help you feel the rod. Otherwise, use a DT3F or DT4F depending on how you like your rod to load. Greg Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 Just my opinion but I wouldn't overline that rod. I think the TT is a fine choice though. Greg "My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it" - Koos Brandt Greg Mitchell

Greg A TT3F wouldn't load the rod like a WF3F until most of the head is out of the rod. A TT4F would allow the caster to feel the load much, much sooner, and for short casts, that is what's important. Andy
Greg Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 All I know is I own a 5 wt TT line and it seems perfectly matched to any of several 5 wt rods I've used it on. Greg "My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it" - Koos Brandt Greg Mitchell
Members Grant Miller Posted April 8, 2009 Author Members Posted April 8, 2009 I notice that the TT (and a lot of other lines) come with the welded front loop to make it easier to attach a leader. Would this make the presentation less delicate (scare fish)? "Life is like a beanstalk, isn't it." ~ John Geirach
drew03cmc Posted April 12, 2009 Posted April 12, 2009 Nope. I use the welded loop, along with a furled leader butt and haven't spooked many fish. My crappy casting has, but the line hasn't. Andy
