timsfly Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 Fished Bennett for a few hrs today, lots of fish in the water, not what you'll see in the summer but plenty of fish in the river. I caught several nice 15-16 inch browns, lots of small rainbows and two rainbows in the 17-18" range. Caught most of mine on a cream colored san juan worm, and several on the burlap fly, # 16, the san juan was on a #14 scud hook. I left about 2 the river was pretty colored up, only about 3 feet of visability, maybe not that much above the dam. There was a nice mix of trout in the river, I was glad to see that, because, I had heard it was really bad fishing at bennett this year, but that is not the case, saw several nice sized trout, I hooked one in the riffle below the hatchery that would have gone an easy 5lbs, but we parted company very quickly. I had to use 2 # 4 shot on the burlap, but none on the san juan worms they had a 1/8" tungsten bead on them that took them down quick enough. http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/timsfly/P4080070.jpg http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/timsfly/P4080072.jpg http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/timsfly/P4080073.jpg Tim Homesley 23387 st. hwy 112 Cassville, Mo 65625 Roaring River State park Tim's Fly Shop www.missouritrout.com/timsflyshop
DoveTail Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Nice looking fish, sounds like some good action with the sunshine.
dave potts Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Tim, An encouraging report. One question- what's a burlap fly? Thanks Dave
Bman Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Tim, Thanks for the great report. Whats up with those Browns? Which zone you catch them in? The only good line is a tight line
ekl-stl Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 The last time I was down in January for C&R, there were an unusually high number of browns in the water.. Only saw one "big" fish but lost of 15" fish.. nice difference.
tippett7 Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 Did you catch any of the fish by the 2 wingdams just above the dam?
timsfly Posted April 11, 2009 Author Posted April 11, 2009 Caught all the browns below the dam, most in the shallow waters behind the bridge(just down stream of the hatchery) Bennett like Roaring River receives a few browns a year. A burlap fly is a fly tied with burlap, from a burlap bag. Tie it like you would a chennile grub. Matt, sounds good, but then Taney's only an hour further... The only good line is a tight line
