Kramr Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 We'll be staying at a resort near Long Shoal. Was hoping to get some advice on where fish and what to use for LMB's, WB, and Crappie. Heard the water is dingy last weekend, is it clearing up?
redbird Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 Long Shoal has lots of great places to fish. The LMB will be in the coves. I like to look for the long deep coves with a good creek channell running through them. The bass will be on secondary points and along gravel banks and banks with good cover. In May I love to get the topwater bite going, pop r's and spooks are my fav Especially if you get some warm cloudy days. You can never go wrong with a spinner bait when learning new water, because they are versitile, and you can cover a lot of water with them. White bass will be in a transition between thier spawning run up the creeks and back out to thier summer haunts on the main lake. You may find them in creek channels or on secondary or main points. Always be on the lookout for them surfacing, but you don't get a lot of big schools of whites doing that until the summer warms up a bit. Sterrett creek updates their fishing report as often as anyone for Truman, and thogh it is not real close to Long Shoal, you can get a good feel of what is happening on the lake. They usually post on Wednesdays. Good luck and have fun! http://www.sterettcreek.com/ Im not a Cardinals fan, but I am a Cardinal. If you know me you know what that means.
shaker Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 redbird gave you a good report sterettcreek is about the only reliable fishing report on Truman. There should be some crappie still on the banks by the time you get there, but I'm sure that the main spawn will be pretty much done if the weather stays decent. They don't all spawn at the same time and the weather guesser is saying that some major rains are on the way, hope that they are wrong again! I'm planning on fishing most of the week at Truman if you like pm me before you head down and maybe I can help a little with the crappie bite!

Main concern is the weather of course. High wind can be hazardous. Also, they're having a tournament that weekend. Have to try to stay out of their way.

Shaker, what bait/techniques do you recommend for crappie?

I have a 17.5 foot aluminum so I know what it's like to deal with high wind. We tried Stockton a couple of weeks ago and were pretty much blown off the lake. Told my wife, we gotta get a heavier boat if we want to fish these big lakes.
redbird Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Glad to help. As far as Tournaments go, I would sleep in until they are out of the marina, or put your boat in the night before and get out before them. They take off usually between 6 and 6:30 depending on the size of the tournament. Once they are fishing the lake kind of absorbs them and there is so much area to fish it is not much problem to find spots where other anglers aren't. (unless it is a particurlarly good spot that many people know of.) Wind can be a problem especially depending on your boat. Still with care you can get to some coves where the wind wont effect your fishing where on Stockton it is so open the wind just blows and blows across it. One of the things I notice on Truman though is that no matter which direction the prevailing winds are blowing, the arms and coves of the lake which are much like rivers channel the wind which ever direction they run. So getting out of the wind can be a trick, but it is definately possible. I fish for white bass a lot in the fall and then wind is your friend, and can help you pinpoint where the fish will be, but the last couple days have been just a little too windy. And now here comes the rain. Good luck, no matter what happens I hope you catch fish and have a good time. Im not a Cardinals fan, but I am a Cardinal. If you know me you know what that means.
shaker Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Kramer the spawn hasn't really started yet, mostly males on the bank. It's anybody's guess on what the lake is going to do with all the rain that has fallen. If it comes up real fast sometimes that will shut the bite off for a while, but there will be fish for you to catch when you get there it just may be a little slow going. I use jigs with a crappie nibble, road runner with black and chartreuse tube, red and chart. white and chart. blue and chart. about anything with chartreuse will work. I do like hot pink or sometimes flame orange jig heads when its very muddy with a black and pink tube just use a 2" tube or larger. I pitch jigs at the bank a lot and use a 10' rod to vertical jig around heavy cover, brush and trees. Sometimes a jig under a bobber or slip bobber works well too. Keep in touch I'll try to help as much as I can. Good luck!
