podum Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Heading to the river on Thursday for our yearly trip (we'll fish Thurs - Sat). We fish from the Bennett access to Barclay. Wondering how things look and whether any of the locals have an idea what today's rain may do to the river. Many thanks in advance. I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.

Wondering how things look and whether any of the locals have an idea what today's rain may do to the river. Many thanks in advance. The river was just starting to look good, it was down to about normal when I went out yesterday... But now we are looking at the possibility of several inches over the next few days (but you never know, it's missouri).. I will gladly keep my eye out for you. Report back here? cricket.c21.com
podum Posted April 27, 2009 Author Posted April 27, 2009 I give a report every May. I'll check back. Looks like storms tonite. Just hoping it's not a total blow out I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.

Just hoping it's not a total blow out Well it looks like the storms are going around Lebanon and the Bennett area (no rain yet today), but we will just have to see how much rainfall drops in the uphill areas. Keep your eyes out here, I will do what I can to report back to you with some pictures or something... Just depends on if my wednesday trip to Alton falls through.. cricket.c21.com
podum Posted April 28, 2009 Author Posted April 28, 2009 Thanks. If you are gonna be around this weekend, say hello to a guy driving a red tundra. If you have any advice, especially around the accesses at Barclay, NRO and Bennett, it would be appreciated. I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.

Are you guys using fly rods or spinning rods? cricket.c21.com
podum Posted April 28, 2009 Author Posted April 28, 2009 Mostly spinning gear. Two guys (including me) will use both fly rods and spinning. I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.
FishinCricket Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Mostly spinning gear. Two guys (including me) will use both fly rods and spinning. Well, pack a loaf I bread and some sinkers sonny.. At least that seems to work best for the locals. I always suggest spoons (Lile the rainbow Kastmaster brand) or little swimmers, like Rapala Crawdads or those little "Onw inch wonders" or the Strike King Bombers.. As for the fly rod, can't help much there, other than to tell you that the fly guys I watch on the river are using sinking line and little black jigs. I am told you can't go wrong with San Juan Worms. Other than that, fish the deep spots. If you like catching smallies or Goggleeye at all you might bring some 16th ounce black and white Maribou Jigs. Fish em around rocks and other current stops. For more specific advice, feel free to call me. If you need a boat, lemme know. cricket.c21.com
podum Posted April 28, 2009 Author Posted April 28, 2009 we use close to the same stuff you recommend. I appreciate the offer of a ride. We generally have to wade/bank fish at the accesses. We have some older guys in our group that can't handle a full day's float. As far as the lures go, we generally use the same type of stuff. The bread thing is a new one on me. Dodged a bullet on the rain yesterday I think. Looks like Wed night through Thursday is bullet number 2. I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.
FishinCricket Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Yeah it's still just spittin here right now, I hope the forecast is wrong for your sake. The river gauge hasn't budged from this last rainy spell.. We shall see. cricket.c21.com
