ekl-stl Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 Just got a call that they are closing the park. No power in the park, and they anticipate flooding as Salem got his pretty hard.
OKFlyFisher44 Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 Does that mean you can't get thru the park to get down to the Tan Vat access points? I mean, if they are still fish-able in the next day or two? Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...
Randall Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 I haven't looked at the gauge but I really wouldn't recommend fishing there until at least a few days from now. If they're closing the park due to flooding, it has to be pretty bad. Cute animals taste better.
TroutFearMe Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Here are the gauge heights and values for Montauck http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?07064440
ozark trout fisher Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Here are the gauge heights and values for Montauck http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?07064440 I'm pretty surprised its closed down. 243 CFS isn't that bad. I bet you could still catch fish in that, but I suppose they closed it because of the power outage. I would venture to say if its only running 243, anywhere thats legal to fish should be fishable, although fairly high. It does say Akers is running 1230 CFS, so I would venture to say you'd want to stay above Welch Spring.
ekl-stl Posted May 12, 2009 Author Posted May 12, 2009 They were closing the park since they didn't have power.. We cancelled our trip for mothers day as we were staying in a cabin. Dont know if it actually closed, or if power has been restored.
Ill Trout Bum Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 They were closing the park since they didn't have power.. We cancelled our trip for mothers day as we were staying in a cabin. Dont know if it actually closed, or if power has been restored. We were actually in the campground Friday when the storm hit. Large trees and limbs falling all around, not a good place to be in high winds!!! I think it was extremely fortunate there were no injuries friday morning. If these winds had occurred Saturday when the campground was at capacity it surely would have been a different story. As we left Friday afternoon, we were told they were closing the park because there was no power. This also means no water and the showerhouses had already been closed. Park officials we spoke to said that it normally takes 2 weeks or more to restore power to the Montauk area. In addition to the power loss, numerous large trees fell at several locations in and around the cabins. When we were finally able to leave, we were astounded to see the damage outside the park all the way to Salem and beyond. Several areas of the highway had a single lane that had been chain-sawed through the downed trees. When we left, the lodge still had phone service. If you are planning on heading down, I would definitely call first. Scott

Thats the only reason I can think of. Its a bummer about the damage.
Don Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Thanks a million for the link Troutfearme, That's the main reason I logged on tonite - to search for Montauk/Current flow. A childhood fishing buddy and I plan to hit it Sunday. I proposed the current below the cable. However, since he is primarily a park fisherman and has never hit the fly area at Montauk, I believe we'll hit both areas wading, water flow permitting of course. Thanks, Don Don May I caught you a delicious bass.
Members Gabby Posted May 15, 2009 Members Posted May 15, 2009 Just got back from the park. Arrived Sunday and the park was open. The lodge and motel rooms had power, but the cabins didn't. Also all the restrooms through-out the park were closed. They were selling licenses and trout stamps as normal. No flooding in the park. The river levels were near normal and water was fairly clear.Fishing Monday and Tuesday was great. Caught and released 17 trout. Pretty much had park to ourselves. All power to the park was back on Wednesday AM. Fishing Wednesday and this AM (Thurs) was slow. Most of the downed trees have been cut and removed and everything looked back to normal today.
