timsfly Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 River is back to where it was before the first rains came, still above normal a bit and still cloudy. To anyone that stopped by today, I'm sorry I wasn't there, had to make a run to the St. John's ER. But don't you worry I'll live Just won't be able to cast for a week or so, drat. We caugth nice fish on black, brown, olive and purple woolybuggers, one lady brought in a nice 5 3/4 lb rainbow on sat, it will make a great mount, she caught it on a purple bugger, she also caught some on a pink woolybugger I tied up for her, I was tying her flies on # 8 TMC 300 hooks, with a tungsten cone(med) and lead wire(.25) on the hook almost down to the bend of the hook, she was getting on the bottom, but she was catching fish everyday. Glo-balls, san juan worms, copperjohns, brassies, flashback hares ears, and pheasant tails were all good this week. Just your regular run of the mill #10 marabou streamer fished with 2 BB shot did well for a few of the guys, olive, black, and salmon seemed to be the colors that were working best. Water clarity is about 2 feet right now, except up by the hatchery, the top pool is very clear compared to the rest of the river, and it has been fishing good for guys that are sight fishing, and I've seen a few fish rising there also. I've seen a few fish rising and have talked to a few customers that said they were catching a trout now and again on a beetle, black, and the june bug colors were best. Chartruse grubs, thread jigs, and fur bugs were working well, fished about 3 feet under a 3/4" teardrop float, and we were adding a B or a BB shot a foot above them to get them down fast. If the rains stay away, the river should be in great shape next week for kids day. For more info call me at the shop, bring you kid down and have some fun, all bait is provided and there will be rods and reels for boys and girls that didn't bring one with them. timsfly Posted May 12, 2009 Author Posted May 12, 2009 I talked to one of the hatchery guys yesterday, there will be 30 lunkers put out for kids day 3-6 pound fish, they are expecting a good turn out, so there will be as many as 3000 trout stocked thru out the day. Bring the kids down and have some fun. The river is getting better everyday. It dropped a full foot over the weekend, and got much clearer. Members Malarkey Posted May 12, 2009 Members Posted May 12, 2009 Tim, thanks for the update on the river. hope you don't get too much rain the next couple of days, I am planning on bringing the little guy down for kids day at the park. Keep us informed and hope to see you next weekend. Is there a specific place in the park the kids fish for this event, or is it the whole park? Thanks Chris
timsfly Posted May 13, 2009 Author Posted May 13, 2009 The area from the hatchery down to the low water bridge below the lodge is usually roped off for kids only(kids 15 and younger) The whole park can be fished for free all day long for kids under 15, I think you have to get the special tag at the hatchery for kids. The Hatchery will provide bait and they have lots of rods and reels for loan. Come on down and have fun, it is just a hoot to watch the kids.
