Members Spence Limb Posted May 19, 2009 Members Posted May 19, 2009 I'm getting ready go give Striper fishing a try on Wednesday; any suggestions on where to go, what to try, and when to try it? I've been wanting to try it for several years, but I am just now finally getting to actually do it.
bferg Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 First of all, I am no Striper pro and I am sure there are lots of guys on this site with a LOT more knowledge than me. I just moved here and this is my first season chasing them so I am a rookie. Also, I NEVER use live bait which probably makes it a little tougher. But, that being said, we have been having really good luck up near Rocky Branch for the past 3 weeks. We have caught at least 1 every time out. My advice is this: 1. Get there EARLY- like 20 min before sun rise 2. Fish main lake points 3. Start with top water baits like a large pop-r- if you are not seeing fish hit the surface around you move or switch to a jerk bait. Make sure it has some good rattles in it. 4. Once the sun is up the top water bite will probably die down. This is when I go to the jerk bait. There is a map you can buy called Fishing Hot Spots- the map shows areas known for Stripers and has been a good starting point for us. Also, I think it is a good sign if you are seeing Striper boats around you. Last week we put a 20 lber and a 12 lber in the boat within 5 minutes of each other. The guys paying the Striper guides trolling past us were jealous!
Members Spence Limb Posted May 19, 2009 Author Members Posted May 19, 2009 Thanks, that is great to hear, I'm going to check out that Map. I haven't been fishing on Beaver in at least 20 years and I'm getting really excited about this trip; plus the prospect of tying on something that weighs more than 10lbs. We actually moved the date to Thursday, and unfortunately have to go in the afternoon, but hopefully there will be some action. mclothier1 Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 Another rookie here... Like Quillback said in another post, We caught them up in the river trolling shad. Im not familiar with the lake at all but I believe we were close to Goshen. We found a decent bite sometime around 7 or 8 am, then it turned off pretty much till about 1pm. Not sure when they are done in the river, but you would think it would have to be soon. I would also think that if you dont have shad, any large shad imitation swimbait would also work.
Members Spence Limb Posted May 27, 2009 Author Members Posted May 27, 2009 Well that was a terrific experience, those stripers sure can fight. We ended up catching some at dusk with Super Spooks and swim-baits, and then after dark with Rattle Traps.

It's not easy going down there having not been and catching some stripers right off the bat. Believe me... I know.
