Members GaryO Posted May 19, 2009 Members Posted May 19, 2009 A couple of friends and I will be headed to Lake Taneycomo in mid-August for 3 days of fly fishing. We are all novice fly-fishermen. We all have 5 or 6 weight outfits with weight forward floating lines. After speaking with a local guide, he suggested that we would be fine sticking with San Juan worms or orange egg pattern flies; fished with 3/0 split shot and strike indicators. I should ad that we will be fishing from the shore ( no waders) or possiblby from a rental boat. Can you guys suggest any other tactics we might consider using? What say you? Thanks…
tippett7 Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 I would not forget about the almighty scud. Size 16 - 20 Olive, Tan, Gray all work good.
3wt Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 I'd suggest spending a few bucks on waders. My limited experience on Taneycomo is that shore fishing is limited at best even if the water is down, it's wide and witout great shore access. If the water is marginally wadeable (like 2 generators) you still need to get in pretty deep even to get to most of the outlet areas It's also dang cold, so if you were imagining wet wading, even in the heat of the day, I would pass.
zander Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 I have tried wet wading there. ONCE. Now maybe others have more insulation than I do on my chicken legs, but it hurt. Blood got cold, legs felt like they were shooting burning fire up through my veins, made me feel a little sick. It sure did take the fun out of the fishing. It sounded like a great idea to me until I did it. Now others have done it and it didn't seem to bother them (according to some older posts on this board) but if I wet wade in Taney again it would be a ways on down from the dam.
