Randall Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 Well, I went down to Cuba to see the family last weekend and decided to hit the Current before the waves of drunken floaters. I got to Tan Vat and started fishing at about 4. That first hour before dawn was absolutely ridiculous. I hooked 8 fish, and only managed to land 1, an 18" rainbow that had plenty of fight to it. I stuck something big about 15 minutes after I showed up and from the way it was jumping, I think it was a rainbow but I'll never know because it threw the hook at my feet as I was turning on the headlamp. I fought the fish for about 5 minutes, so I think I was just horsing it and pulled the hook. Maybe 20 minutes after daybreak, several people showed up so I headed down to Baptist and ended up fishing with a couple guys down there, turning a few fish but not getting any hits. One of the guys turned a monster brown on a rainbow swimmy-jimmy. I decided to bag it a little after 9 and as I was walking up, I started seeing a lot of canoes coming down. Then I broke my rod when I got to my mom's place so I couldn't go back Saturday night. Cute animals taste better.
Nortrad Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 It's a rush strippin' the streamers. You were up early. I tried the Swimmy Jimmy also last Thursday, just turning a few, including a big brown, couldn't get an attack. I have since been told to fish it slower and figure out a retrieve that works as every fly 'swims' differently. I'd definitely like to try that early fishing. Bummer about the rod. Look like a new one is in order.
