OKFlyFisher44 Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 The wife and I decided friday afternoon to take a little mini-vacation to Branson for the weekend so we left out saturday afternoon after I got off work. After a pit-stop in Springfield for a few flies (thanks BackCountry Outfitters) and some dinner, we arrived in Branson around 9:00 p.m. 6/6 - Night Trip I got down to the dam around 11:00 p.m. saturday night and there were several cars in the parking lot. Was any members of OAF there saturday night? Got geared up and walked in @ Outlet #2. This was my 1st night fishing experience on Taney and I hadn't fished Taney in over a year so it was an interesting experience figuring out the way the river was laid out. I walked down and fished the area below Rebar for the time I was there. Ended up catching 6 rainbows on mohair leeches in purple and blood red. Shoulda landed more fish but I missed lots of strikes and had a few LDRs...it was quite frustrating. I was surprised on how violent the strikes are at night. I left at 1:30... 6/7 - Mid Morning The plan was to get up at 5:30 and be on the river at 6:00 but due to a fussy 6-month old baby, I didn't get much sleep so I slept in. Got down to river around 10:00. Lots of guys on the water already. Again, I walked down and fished the area below Rebar the whole time I was there. I started with a brown san juan worm w/ a tan scud as a dropper and never needed to change. I caught 12 'bows along with a few LDRs. Had a great time. The fish were 50/50 on the san juan vs. the scud. It was basically every other fish. Everyone was catching fish....I called it quits at 12:30 and headed back to the cabin for lunch! 6/7 - Night Trip Went back up to the dam around 10:00 p.m. and had the whole place to myself. It was really nice to have the whole trophy section to yourself. Well, I didn't see any other cars or headlamps so I'm guessing I was alone. I fished the Big Hole area with purple buggers and mohairs till 12:30...ended catching 7 'bows and still missed a ton of strikes. I think I was pulling the bug out of the fish's mouth instead of just raising the rod. The violent strikes made me think of bass fishing so I was setting pretty hard. It was a beautiful night with the full moon. I AM HOOKED ON NIGHT FISHING! 6/8 - Morning Fished from 7:00 to 8:30 in the area just below Rebar again with the brown san juan w/ tan scud and caught 8 'bows. The fish seemed pretty lazy this morning on eating the bugs...I lost a bunch of fish right after hooking up and I wasn't setting hard. Had a great time fishing... I'll hopefully be back in a few weeks for some more night fishing...I am hooked! Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...

Hopper Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 A little fish porn for you guys.... I started up on the flats near the big log at outlet one and moved down just below that root ball in your last picture around midnight caught several nice bows and one 18+ brown from that spot using Size #4 purple conehead streamer. I agree night fishing is awsome! Gregg The gods do not deduct from man's allotted span the hours spent in fishing.

FishinCricket Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 So, I must admit that I have never fished the niangua past about 10 pm.. I should, shouldn't I? Any particular tips for night fishing? cricket.c21.com

Fish areas that you know what the bottom structure is like. I use my 8 wt. with 4X tippet , strikes seem to be harder and fish a little larger at night, and large streamers (Check my 2 june post). It's a blast. The gods do not deduct from man's allotted span the hours spent in fishing.
fly2fish Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 I AM HOOKED ON NIGHT FISHING! If you got hooked on catching a few at night wait til you have one of those 50+ fish nights! I see you are from Oklahoma around my area. I usually make at least 2 trips a month to Branson (wifes business) and fish almost entirely at night. Send me a PM next time you plan to go and maybe we can meet up at the dam. I will be there this weekend fishing Saturday and Sunday nights. F2F

Greg Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 Didn't do any night fishing. But did get to fish Sun in the daytime. Just an awesome day of fishing. Best I've had post-flood on Taney. Mid morning a guy next to me caught an 18" female bow that was just a pig. Shaped like a football. He asked me to help him photograph and measure it which I did. I'd already caught several decent fish but was wishing I could catch one like it. 10 minutes later I hooked and landed a male bow that was just a bit bigger with a really impressive kype. That was the biggest of the day but most were nice sized. And a lot of the fish were acrobatic doing multiple jumps. Also caught 3 browns. Bring on the low water!!!! At least for a while. OKflyfisher I'm glad you had a good trip too and hope you don't mind me tagging on your thread.
