ozark trout fisher Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 Just got back from my first trip to the boundary waters. It is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled places I have ever been to. Fishing was fantastic. Smallies were spawning, but the ones that weren't were tearing up topwaters. I have never fished for Northern pike before and I found out that they are a blast to catch. They are aggressive but have terrible aim on topwaters, but ussually come back for a second or third try at it. Smallies averaged around 16 inches. I caught my personal best at 20.5. Probably caught around 30-40 per day. Pike were everywhere, just find a weedbed. Big fish was a little under 40 inches. Caught my first lake trout while trolling a spoon. I am definitely going back next year. Lessons learned: Take a backup camera Take better rain gear Plan a longer trip-6 days is not enough The boundary waters is one of the trips that I absolutely must make. Nothing like a big northern strain smallie. Awesome pics. Beautiful area. Gotta be some brookies in that creek you got a picture of......................................................
ozark trout fisher Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Nope, no brookies in this one. The area is real close to Lake superior though, home of the Coaster brookie. Next year I will try to spend a day fishing for those as well. Oh well. Sounds like you had a great trip
Members trout junkie Posted June 22, 2009 Members Posted June 22, 2009 I'm headed up there next week for my first trip there also. Which entry point did you take? We're using 49 and are planning to fish Smith and Banadad lakes. Can't wait!!!
