Members msr Posted June 17, 2009 Members Posted June 17, 2009 New guy here and I have not been able to find info on the average temperatures of the James River near lake Springfield or Lake Springfield. Any input? Also, I realize that after rainfall the flow increases bur what is the average flow of the James River just above Lake Springfield? Lets say would it be too fast to paddle up past 65 and drift back?
Members gobblergetter Posted June 17, 2009 Members Posted June 17, 2009 check the usgs charts as far as flows are concerned you can find a link to it in the james river section but under normal circumstances you should be able to paddle way past 65 bridge and even a little ways past the highway 60 bridge before you ever hit any kind of substantial current and as far as the temp its just like most other rivers in the state until you get down to the power plant and it will be a little warmer, in the winter to the lower lake stays a nearly constant 70 degrees or so and the same goes for below the dam for a little ways as long as there is water going over the dam
Ämp Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 everything he says is true... Btw has anyone rented a canoe from the new place in the park?..I went with my dad in his canoe today and seen some guys that said it only cost 5$ to rent one can this be confirmed ? sounds like a good deal to me .almost worth leaving mine at home and just using theirs .

Lets say would it be too fast to paddle up past 65 and drift back? Let's say it will be warm . . if not hot in some areas. The fish will be sluggish. Under the 65 bridge . . there may be some shad running . . maybe late in the day, early in the morning . . try top water. In the weeds . . try heavy test line. Up past the Hwy 60 bridge . . favor the shadows . . then the rock ledges on your right. That's where the current is. If the water is moving . . you'll only be able to paddle up so far. I use a trolling motor. Small crank baits . . and, I like the plastic worm. Good Luck.
