Members ten99j4 Posted July 3, 2009 Members Posted July 3, 2009 Went to the river yesterday at Doniphan, before I had to go to work and had some success compared to some recent trips. The river was clear and it was only about 86 degrees. It was a great morning to be on the water. I wanted to try to get out there before the July 4th holiday traffic hit. I was looking to catch some crappie that I found last week, but spooked them by getting snagged right on top of them. The crappie weren't to be found today, but the goggle-eye were. I caught about a dozen fish in an hour and a half. Two smallmouth that were not 12 inches and then four perch. Those six I had to throw back. I caught one really nice goggle-eye and then five decent ones. I ended up throwing them all back. Decided to let them have another chance, I have work the holiday weekend, so they would have had to go into the freezer anyway. The color that worked today was transparent chartreuse. I had a mister twister on a small gold spinner. I tried white, which is usually a safe color, but they didn't hit at it for some reason.

Is there still some good walleye fishing to be had in that stretch of river?
Members ten99j4 Posted July 27, 2009 Author Members Posted July 27, 2009 I haven't been to the river in a couple weeks now. I hope to spend some time fishing during my vacation in a few weeks though. I found the crappie down river from the boat launch at Doniphan. They were under a junction of logs about 2 to 3 feet under the surface of the water. I didn't even know that they were there and was expecting smallmouth or goggle-eye. I threw in the mess of logs and let the lure drop as I retrieved it over the main large log. All of the sudden, 5 or 6 crappie came out from under the large log and started shining. One decent sized crappie got on, but when I tried to get in there again, my hook hung on the top of the large log. I spooked them when I got up closer to get the hook loose. As for walleye-- It's been about 4 or 5 years it seems like, but the Conservation Department released a bunch of 2 inch walleye up and down Current River from Deer Leap down to south of the Doniphan boat launch. I had the opportunity to release a few buckets full with my grandfather, just down from the boat launch. I'd have to say that he was proud to be able to help with that project. He passed away this last February, but I owe my love of fishing to him. He used to have a place on the river off of U-hwy here in Ripley County, when I was young and I really, really enjoyed going fishing with him, my dad and uncle. I don't know how many of the walleye would have survived and/or have been caught by now, though. Do you all gig?
