Members Dan052 Posted July 5, 2009 Members Posted July 5, 2009 I have a fly rod and reel laying around the house, that i got for a gift about 3 years ago from a neighbor, but still have yet to use it. Which I am almost ashamed to admit. I used to go trout fishing with him, a few years back at taneycomo, off of a dock, up lake a little ways. We would usually catch fish, but nothing ever worth bragging about. A few decent brownies! I've been looking at getting back into trout fishing now that we're in the heat of the summer and it can be torturous sitting out on a boat all day. Where are some good spots on Taneycomo? or Bennett? Or Roaring River? I've heard a lot of good things about Taney, right below the dam...or the Roaring River state park. Any advice on lures? Like I said, Im basically a novice when it comes to trout fishing.....so any advice would be appreciated
tippett7 Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 Check out Lillies map of Taneycomo and read some of the archived reports.
Leonard Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 the trout parks is a great place to get practice on casting... its short distance.. Taney would be good for a novice.. for short line indicator fishing... Or get a guide like: Stan and Carolyn.. (river run outfitters) Chuck ..... (anglers and archery) Phil... (but hes gone for a few days) Michael ... (back country outfitters) I dont know if Tim at Roaring River State Park does (but Im sure he would/can help)..if you ask and of these can really get you casting good... and some even offer casting lessons http://www.taneycomonights.com
Randall Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 Leonard is absolutely right. I know a few people that tried flyfishing but gave it up after a time or two because it was "too hard". Hiring a guide for your first few times can drastically shorten the learning curve and make the experience much more fun. There are a host of guides on this forum that cover about every piece of water in the Ozarks. For a beginner, you can't really go wrong fishing Taney or the White with a guide, especially if they're running water. If nothing else, you can go to a fly shop and pick their brains a little but its not quite the same. Cute animals taste better.
Ämp Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 or to save you 400$......... 10 and 2 o'clock ..wrist action dictates the size of loop . and a scud bug...roaring river is like fishing a pickle barrel , bennet springs gets really crowded.. and taneycomo is the fickle mother of both. If you feel like taking a extra person I would be more than happy to show you my favorite haunts and lures of choice. .
RSBreth Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Don't just limit yourself to trout, either. One of my favorite things is wading smaller creeks around here for Smallmouth and Rock Bass with my favorite 6-weight and some poppers and streamers. Awesome fun and cool fishing on those August dog days. The Bass and panfish aren't as picky as trout can be.
