Trevor K Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 I'm planning a trip down to taney in about a month and was wondering if anybody ever used any hopper patterns down there. They work great out west on the Green, but I didn't know if they were worth a try on taney. any advice (size, location, etc.) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Micheal Kyle Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Hoppers work great, I use a lot of hoppers down by the Boat ramp then on down by Point Royal. I will also fish them at night skipping them right across the top. Size 10 and 12 tans and yellows Good luck I'm planning a trip down to taney in about a month and was wondering if anybody ever used any hopper patterns down there. Zack Hoyt Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 A good friend of mine had alot of success with large beetle patterns. The Japanese beetles were everywhere a few weeeknds ago, and any time the wind would blow, you could drop one and have a hit about the time it hit the water. Jeremy Hunt Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Hoppers do work, but right now I would concentrate on beetle patterns for more hook ups. The Big Ugly with droppers are really working great as well. I’ve been throwing hoppers, but they don’t work as well on Taney like they do on the White. Ant patterns in black are working pretty well to. My buddy showed me how to tie them with mono eyes and hackle the center. Off set the hook to where it sits in the water, so tie the ant more up on the front of the hook. Good luck and have a safe trip down. Accept the drift.....<>>><flysandguides.comVisit my blog

I would say they'll work better by the time you get here. They like smaller sizes better then the larger ones. Accept the drift.....<>>><flysandguides.comVisit my blog
Trevor K Posted July 6, 2009 Author Posted July 6, 2009 Thanks for all the advice guys! I was thinking about using them above a dropper as Jeremy suggested. What about using midges or scuds below a hopper?
zsmith62 Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 Thanks for all the advice guys! I was thinking about using them above a dropper as Jeremy suggested. What about using midges or scuds below a hopper? I've never tried it but I'm sure that they'd work. In fact, I think that was what Jeremy was refering to in the first place. I had a lot of fun with hopper patterns last summer, so much that I think it's become my favorite way to fish. Zach Smith
fly2fish Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 After having my styrofoam strike indicator engulfed several times by large fish when fishing during the day I switched to something that had a hook in it, mainly a foam hopper. I have only caught a couple on it but have only fished during the day twice in the last 3 years. Now I need to work on a hopper pattern that can accomodate a glo stick....... F2F
Jeremy Hunt Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 Trevor, Never had luck with scuds under a dropper, unless you wieght the fly instead of using a split shot, but even then the drift isn't right. It's easier to use some sort of bead head midge fishing under the dropper about 18-22 inches, that way you can drift in the water column instead of trying to keep scud patterns on the bottom, which is normally where scuds would be and how trout see them.
