trout fanatic Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 So this morning I thought I would spend a few hours fly fishing a local lake. Tied on a white zonker and on about the 4th or 5th cast set the hook into a hawg bluegill. I just chuckled at his tude and continued fishing changing out fly patterns every 15 or so minutes. I kept noticing a school of feeding fish just agonizingly out of range. Any attempt I made to reach them just got me close enough to put them down so I ignored them. I tied on a lake erie shiner (streamer) and continued to fish when out of the corner of my eye I noticed a dreaded wind knot in my leader and decided to ignore it as well (I know you guys know what's coming right). About 5 minutes later i heard a disturbance on the water and looked up. There it is, the school of feeding fish has returned and this time its within casting distance! So I fire off a long cast, let the streamer settle into the depths then started a slow strip. On the third strip I absolutely got hammered. I set the hook and felt the wonderful resistance of a heavy fish then nothin. Line broke right at the wind knot. So I tied on another leader and another zonker and caught 2 more bluegills and an 11 inch crappie beforeending my morning. Must resolve to pull my head out
Ämp Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 This is close to my problem . I have what they call OFD (obsessive fishing disorder) which causes me to keep 3 of my rods rigged with the same exact lure no matter what the conditions..this would be great for those of us that remember to retie or check on occasion for burrs in the line. But in my case it takes slinging a 3 hooked super spook 2 football fields away w/o the line attached to realize I have went 3 trips with the same lure and knot. I have yet to lose a good bass to this but I can see that it will happen to me eventually and when it does I pray the muscles relax so That I may see the light of day. .
