Members Kevin B. Well, I decided to jump into the world of fly fishing and made it down to Taney to put theory into practice. Got into the water about 7:30 PM on Tuesday and fished for about an hour and actually managed to land one. I think he was probably busy laughing at my feeble casting (it seemed much smoother in my backyard) and accidently inhaled my midge. I think it was in the "Rocking Chair" area. Came back at around 6:00 Wednesday morning and fished until about 11:00 when my trip was cut short by the sound of a snap as I was bringing one in. My 4-piece rod is still a 4-piece...but now with a permanent split between pieces 3 and 4. While the trip definitely didn't end the way I would have liked, I still had a blast. Standing in the water, watching the fog roll over and the trout rise is a great way to spend an evening or start the morning. Only landed four. While I tried a variety of flies, all four were on a black midge (had a couple of hits on other things, but didn't hook up). Now I just need to get the rod repaired and start planning the next trip. zsmith62 Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 What kind of rod? A lot of manufacturers will cover it if it is broken under normal use... Zach Smith
Members AZ_Trout Posted July 9, 2009 Members Posted July 9, 2009 Welcome to the addiction Always glad when people have success early on in their fly fishing adventures. I know for the first few years of trying to fly fish - I bet -- I looked like an uncoordinated - brain dead - spazzz. Most major manufactures will repair or replace the rod, so will many good shops, beats trying to do it yourself. Now you have an excuse to buy a couple of more rods. I always try to have multiple rods along on even a day trip. If you breaks I have a back up, I can have different weight and or length rods ready for back up or if a lighter or heavier weigh is needed. But mostly it is a great reason just to buy more - new - different. You might want to try a trip to Roaring River State Park too. A good place to work on your technique. tippett7 Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 Now you have to back out there and catch that fish that broke your rod. Give em hell.

Members Kevin B. Posted July 9, 2009 Author Members Posted July 9, 2009 It was a TFO Pro 4wt that will be heading in for repair/replacement shortly. Although I screwed up and already told my wife about the warranty. Should of gotten a new rod first and THEN mentioned that "I just found out" that the old one had a warranty. Busy for the next couple weeks, but hope to talk my dad into joining me sometime in August...if not, I'll have to go without him. Members Kevin B. Posted July 9, 2009 Author Members Posted July 9, 2009 Any idea why it broke? I wish I could say it was the huge fish on the line as it would make for a better story, but that wasn't the case. Was holding the rod high and reaching for the line and heard the snap and shortly after I realized what happened, he snapped off the line at the tippet. I'm guessing that the ferrule might not have been fully set in between the 3rd/4th piece which weakened the connection, but thats just a guess.
