3wt Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Don't get me wrong. I have a special tie to montauk too. I think it's the best stream in the state, and in winter during C&R it's my hands-down favorite. I don't look down on it at all, and I love the early morning siren routine. The stream is kept in near perfect condition in my mind and is rarely messed with. The "in the woods" feel is tough to beat. I'm not one that catches 20+ fish routinely, in fact more than 10 is a rarity for me most days - so I don't count it as easy. The only complaints I have is the crowds, the put/take trout that don't REALLY behave like normal trout. I've never fished CO, but even the wildER trout in the blue ribbon areas here are a different animal altogether. It's generally a trick to get a trout to hand in the blue ribbon current w/o a net. I rarely need to use one for stockers. Really though, I don't look down on you...I'm in the club.
Members BigNick78 Posted August 10, 2009 Author Members Posted August 10, 2009 Bignick, Hello thanks for the montauk blog. I myself have fished this since I was a little guy. Love the park and fish it often. My duahgters and wife have even started up the fishing with their own waders and poles and the other $$$$$ it takes to get started. Anyways I see you are heading down in Sept and if your looking for someone to hook up on the stream shoot me a message and maybe if I'm off at the firehouse we could catch them together. I work a 48 hr shift and then off 96 hrs so lots of time to get there. im 3 hrs out and I drive it for the day once in awhile. let me know how you do if not. NO hard feelings here just good stories. Brian Thanks Brian but i cannot take you up on that offer i'm going to be in town from out of state and i'll be there with my parents. Maybe one of these days when i move back to Missouri i'll take you up on that offer. @ 3wt Dont get me wrong im not trying to belittle you or nothing. its just that when you have fished at a place like montauk, and then try to get someone to understand the concept. Its like pulling teeth, you understand what its like to fish at Montauk i was using the post above as an example to show whats it like to an out of state person. I havent been to Montauk in about 3 years and i've caught the fishing bug once again. Im going to try to teach my girlfriend (who has only fished once in her life) how to fish. This trip will either be great, or a great disaster. I personally dont think fishing Montauk is easy, its only really easy from about Whistle blow and maybe thirty or forty five minutes after. Especially getting towards the afternoon when you get those fish that have seen everything and have been there for a week. then thats when it actually gets fun and is a challenge. I might catch twenty fish a day but ten or fifteen of those will come from whistle to eight am when its a lil easier. Twenty more days to go though. i'll make sure to post a detailed fishing report after my trip. I'll try to post Pictures and or any video that i get during my trip, on my Blog. - Nick View my Blog http://www.montaukchronicles.blogspot.com/

People generally either love trout parks, or hate them. Personally, I really enjoy them. I know the fish aren't as hard to catch as in a Blue Ribbon area, and I accept that. But a trout is a trout, and I enjoy every one I catch. Also, Montauk is rarely crowded on weekdays. Actually, compared to trout in the mountain streams of the west, I believe trout park fishing is actually harder, with the possible exception of the first 15 minutes after buzzer. But frankly, I enjoy trout fishing of any color. Would I rather fish a wilder stream? Yes. But if you can just mentally block out the crowds, you will realize that you are on an awesomely beautiful stream, and the trout are plentiful. That's all you can reasonably ask for in a good trout stream.
