Members tsfinest Posted July 23, 2009 Members Posted July 23, 2009 Taking some family to the lower illinois for fishing this weekend and wondering where are some good hotels to stay. I know there is Marval, but probably full on short notice, and Fin and Feather, which is about 100$, is there anywhere else? Thanks in advance
DaddyO Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 None that I know of. If you can't get in at Marval, you may have to go to Webber Falls. I think the place is called the Knights Inn. You may want to google it and another place called the Sleepy Traveler or something like that. I have never stayed at either of them. I have stayed at Marval and find it acceptable as a place for the wife and kids to play while you fish. DaddyO We all make decisions; but, in the end, our decisions make us.

It is right next to Gambino's Pizza in Gore. It was about $40 per night. Nice and clean. Not a lot of extras, but a place to sleep. They do have a fridge in the room. There is another one but I can't remember the name. "The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope." John Buchan

Bill Butts Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 Hello tsfinest~ You named to two most obvious places to stay. You didn't mention whether you needed amenities like a pool, etc, for which MarVal would be the best. Someone in this thread mentioned the Suite 16 motel in Gore, and I've stayed there twice (not in the past year) and I can assure you that it ain't sweet and it wasn't $40. Over $70 with tax and it was barely decent enough for two tired fishermen. It was under new ownership and managment if I recall correctly (couldn't hardly understand the middle-eastern accent). I did find a pretty nice alternative in Gore called the Two Rivers Inn, which is actually two 4-plexes just off the main drag on Hwy 64. It was owned by a very nice guy named Fred (918-489-5575). I think one of the 4-plexes was used for long term rental/lease and the other was rented by the night or week. It was very clean, had two bedrooms, one large bath, large living area, and full kitchen. I believe we paid $85/night. One suggestion, if you do rent from him, consider taking your basic pots, pans, and quality kitchen knives if you plan to do any cooking. The ones provided when we stayed there were poor quality and selection. No other amenities. While a Google search would certainly be one good approach for additional choices, I would also suggest that you call Dave's Bait & Tackle in Gore and ask them for their suggestions. (918-489-2424) Hope this is helpful. Bill Bill Butts Springfield MO "So many fish, so little time"
Members jwpage Posted July 23, 2009 Members Posted July 23, 2009 I stayed at the the Suite 16 Motel the Monday after the 4th of July weekend and the price for one night was $40. That was for three adults and one child. it wasn't five star accommodations but it was a place to sleep. Bill Butts Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 Hello again~ Well, just to get to the bottom of the price issue, I just called the Suite 16 Motel in Gore. Must have been the same folks, the woman couldn't understand or speak English well enough to quote me a rate, so she handed the phone to a man. He quoted me $65/night for two beds on the weekend, and $55/night during the week. I mentioned that I had heard that they only charge $40/night and he said "oh, no, no, no". It would be great if there was a place for $40/night even if it was wasn't too great a place. Could you have been at a different motel? Bill Bill Butts Springfield MO "So many fish, so little time"

Bill I am sure that I stayed at the Suite 16 Motel and am sure that we paid $40 for one night on a Monday night. I have stayed at Marval since they changed management and they are very expensive. For the price, I believe it is a good deal. Two beds and a shower. "The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope." Members dhopper Posted July 23, 2009 Members Posted July 23, 2009 I have stayed at all of the before mentioned and my personal favorite is definitely Two Rivers as well. It's just over 100 a night. He has a real nice place, two bedrooms front room and kitchen. I haven't stayed at marval since before the change either, I'm not a fan.
Members LB&M Posted July 24, 2009 Members Posted July 24, 2009 I've been around that area for years and there is no place there I would take the family except Marval and it is very expensive. Fin&Feather, a little farther north, is not bad. I took my young grandkids to Marval for a weekend a couple of years ago and they loved it because there was so much for them to play on. I wouldn't make a habit of it. And I was in an RV! There are so many places like that with poor accommodations - that's the reason I camp. Lots of decent campgrounds and I would rather sleep in the bed in my camper than in a motel anyway. After staying in motels for many years on the job, large city and small town, I really appreciate my own clean bed and shower. Ike - Shooting Starr's Commander
