DoveTail Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 The fishing was pretty slow, but enough action to keep it interesting. The water is low and clear and the fish were feeding on TINY nymphs and dries (the real bugs). What I got them to bite on was totally different. I threw #26 dries trying to get their attention but I was ignored. The traditional black and yellow marabou early in the morning always hooks up some fish. As the crowds broke off after the morning rush I started throwing some dries and other nymphs in Zones 1 and 2. Flies that seemed to get some hits were Tim's Fly Shop famous burlap fly, Micro Mayfly Nymph #16, Tan Caddis Poophah #18, March Brown Foam Emerger #14, Latex Caddis #16, Green PM Caddis #16, Rust PM Caddis # 14, Olive Beadhead LeBug #16, Orange Beadhead LeBug #14 Beadhead Norfolk Special #16, Midge #18 (copper tungsten bead, copper wire, rusty dun body), Midge #16 (black / silver), stoneflies, scuds and sowbugs also. I tried a Zug Bug and no luck those days. Surprisingly the Griffiths Gnat didn't produce anthing either with fish sipping the surface. The dries that I had luck on were big even though they were feeding on tiny flies. No luck with all colors and styles of Comparduns, Spinners or other flies with the exception of the #14 Marrch Brown Foam Emerger. I had a decent trout rise and hammer the March Brown. The first cast it rose to take a look. The 2nd drift it hammered it and dove and made a run - a FAST run and never stopped. I should have chased it as it took me into the backing and almost to the end, I was tinkering with the drag and too much line out with an 8x and that was the end of it. I tried quite a few different styles of caddis dries...got some lookers but no takers. On dry that worked really good and a trout literally swallowed it, so it must have thought is was good was a Foam Cricket #12. I thought they certainly would like some ant patterns...no takers this time??? I threw all styles and colors with no luck. I threw a moth pattern and hoppers with no luck either. Lots of lookers, but this trip the Cricket was the ticket. Image below: I got the Foam Crickets from THE FLY STOP: http://www.theflystop.com/store-cid-7-dry-...rrestrials.html Latex Caddis: http://www.theflystop.com/store-page-produ...phs-caddis.html Green PM Caddis: http://www.theflystop.com/store-page-produ...phs-caddis.html Olive Beadhead LeBug: http://www.theflystop.com/store-page-produ...ead-nymphs.html Orange Beadhead LeBug: http://www.theflystop.com/store-page-produ...ead-nymphs.html Rust PM Caddis: http://www.theflystop.com/store-page-produ...ead-nymphs.html Green PM Caddis: http://www.theflystop.com/store-page-produ...ead-nymphs.html Beadhead Norfolk Special: http://www.theflystop.com/store-page-produ...ead-nymphs.html The flies and service from the Fly Shop are great...at least the fish like them. Looks like the "summer" crowds are fading away and not too many soft plastics in Zone 2 or other things. Someone did have an egg pattern on the handicap ramp in Zone 1 that when it rained, the "yarn" melted!!! Hmmm? Tight lines!
flyfishmaster Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 Great Report Dove. Too bad the cast to catch ratio was done. That seems to be a common toon this year from a lot of regular fishermen. Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
Members jdixon Posted August 19, 2009 Members Posted August 19, 2009 I will have to say The Fly Stop does have good, inexpensive flies and you can use pay pal. Will be at B-springs on monday hope dry fly action picks up.
trout fanatic Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 I have had great luck dealing with cory at the fly stop. Lots of cheap flies with extremely fast deliveries. Glad to see other folks use him too.
