I'm changing jobs at the end of the month and will have a week off. If I stay close to home, I'll probably hit the buffalo for a few days. However, the possibility of a trip to the Crested Butte area has recently become an option. I've been to Colorado for fishing trips twice. Both times I went to the Creede area. The fishing has been a little disappointing. The locaitons that were impressive (and we did fish two creeks that were extremely impressive - some of my most memorable fishing ever) were VERY hard to get to, but otherwise it seems like we were on heavily pressured small streams fishing for small fish, or the Rio.

What's the fishing like near Crested Butte?

It's been a number of years since I've been there but .... the Taylor and Gunnison Rivers are fairly close to Crested Butte. Gigantic rainbows in the Taylor below the Taylor Res. dam. Good drift boat fishing for browns and rainbows on the Gunnison. The East River is also close but I have never fished it. PC

Cheers. PC

Definitely fish the Gunnison. That is one of the best rivers in Colorado for sure. If you hit it right, the fishing is absolutely epic.

Another area in Colorado you might look at is the northwest corner around Steamboat and Craig. I used to live out there, and there are a lot of options for awesome, un-pressured trout fishing. You got the Yampa, White, as well as Trappers and Stagecoach Lake out there, along with countless mountain creeks and lakes that hold mostly cutthroats. The trout fishing isn't as famous as much of the rest of the state, but it is just as good if not better. You also have world class pike and smallie fishing in the lower Yampa. Again, just an idea.

There's good Brook Trout fishing in the feeder creeks above Taylor. Might run into a few elk hunters up there. I'm pretty sure it was september when I was up there. Aspens should be beautiful too!
