sms_alum Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 Anyone fish the lower Meramec much? I fish Suicide and Cardiac a couple of times a year but have had limited success on the river the closer you get to St. Louis. Not picky on the species of fish because I can get my boat out in the river about 15 minutes from my house. Also has anyone been hearing anything about the asain carp problem yet this year on the river? Last year there were quit a few near George Winter park but haven't heard/seen any so far this year.
shawncat Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 I fish the lower Meremec between Catawissa and Eureka.Good success on bass and cat limited success on crappie.I have'nt had time lately due to scouting turkeys.I'll post next time I go if I do good.
Kicknbass Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 I have fished most all of the Meramec over the years. I have found the lower to be inconsistent. I have done ok on bass in the spring, but struggle in the hot part of the summer. When fishing live bait, hold on. You never know what you may catch. I have caught bass, walleye, crappie, white bass, Hybrid stripers, drum, catfish, grinnell, redhorse, carp, spoonbill, you name it, if it swims in the Mississippi, It will be in the lower meramec. If you want a quick morning trip out of St. Louis, the lower meramec is close. If I have any time, I prefer other locations. However, with the price of gas, I may visit the lower meramec more often this year. I can be on the river at Kirkwood in about 15 minutes. " Too many hobbies to work" - "Must work to eat and play"
Members DeeWilly Posted May 4, 2006 Members Posted May 4, 2006 Fished the lower Meramec near George Winter yesterday. The river was about three feet high and rising with lots of debris and water hazards. As for the fishing it was very slow. Caught a couple of bass all small, a crappie, and a few gar one of which was about four feet long but, straightened my light wire crappie hook. I was hoping for a strong crappie bite. Maybe next trip. Has anyone else been out this week on the Meramec? Thanks, DeeWilly
sms_alum Posted May 4, 2006 Author Posted May 4, 2006 Dee Willy I was planning on putting in at George Winter this weekend and doing some fishing, but it sounds like its pretty slow. Where abouts do you usually fish up or down from there? Also did you see any asian carp jumping yet? Jason
Members DeeWilly Posted May 12, 2006 Members Posted May 12, 2006 Jason, Sorry it took so long to answer your question. I have been working and turkey hunting this past week so needless to say I haven't been out on the river since lastweek. The fishing has still been inconsistent for me which is unuasual for me this time of year. By now I usually have at least on banner day but it hasn't happened yet. I usually fish the mined out areas left and right of GW and slip back to any flooded areas I can reach to fish brush etc. The last time out the river was still high with water hazards. I have not had any carp jumping yet but, I have seen many common carp feeding on the surface. How about yourself have you been out yet, how have you done, and where do you usually concentrate? Darren
sms_alum Posted May 12, 2006 Author Posted May 12, 2006 I was out last saturday for a couple of hours, mainly to run my boat since its been a little while. Not much happening so a few gar, lots of boaters, and lots of people bank fishing. Caught huge drum on a power grub but that was it. Would like to hear any other ways people been doing well. Not a big carp fisherman but they sure are fun to smoke with the boat when they jumping. Also have seen people shooting them with bows but not yet this year. Let me know how you do if you end up getting out there. Jason
Members defiant42 Posted July 4, 2006 Members Posted July 4, 2006 Hi all, am new here. We fished the Meramec just east of Eureka on 07/01, I-44 off of route 66 park. Caught several blue gill. Got a couple of cat's. Was drop shotting night crawlers with the current along the slow spots. Have had good results fishing using craw-dads. Smallies & cats will go after them. Just drop-shot them into the current. Takes a while to catch enough crawdads though.... Would really like to get into the walleye. We live in Eureka, do not have a small boat. Any suggestions/tips would be greatly appreciated.
shawncat Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 A friend and I floated Pacific Palisades to Allenton last Sun.Caught a few pumpkenseeds, two bass and big drum.We were using blk/wht rapala floaters and plastic craws.Caught only one small walleye out of the lower 'mac'in March on a crawler.I heard a few get caught along bluffs below hwy W bridge [deep hole all the way to Big River]Also heard a few get caught below Rockford beach dam on the Big.
