Members JONBOY Posted September 13, 2009 Members Posted September 13, 2009 Awesome... you finally got one. Congrats! Novice Fly fisher.
OKFlyFisher44 Posted September 13, 2009 Posted September 13, 2009 That's a nice fish! Carp are a lot of fun on a fly rod...it can become very very addicting, chasing the Golden Ghost! I can't imagine fighting one of those toads on a 5wt! I use a 7wt and its almost not enough rod for the larger fish! Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...
Geoff Posted September 14, 2009 Author Posted September 14, 2009 Well this was a lesson learned, the 5wt was NOT ENOUGH for this guy. i will have to upload the video i took of me fighting it. i wanted some sort of proof that i actually caught one incase i didnt land it haha. couple of times in the video you can see my fly rod bent almost into the water. i think that catching this one proves i really do a need to get my 8 wt going. i was worried several times the 5 wt was going to pop. the fight was incredible though, my right arm is still sore from battling it "When you do things right, people wont be sure you've done anything at all."
Members Stragler Posted November 9, 2009 Members Posted November 9, 2009 Fun on the fly rod. We have some pretty good trout fishing here in CO. but we always find time to go after Mr. Carp.
Brian K. Shaffer Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 Well done. You didnt even break the rod. Is that a Fenwick ? I've got a few secret spots here in Branson for carps. Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.

Don Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 Congrats! I've not landed one on the fly yet. Not as easy as many think. Don May I caught you a delicious bass.
drew03cmc Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 I caught a mini carp (13" or so) on my old three weight. He didn't fight much, but I can imagine the fight that toad gave! Be careful...I am picking up an 8wt with the intention of chasing double digit carp... Andy
Geoff Posted November 10, 2009 Author Posted November 10, 2009 Rod is a 4 piece St. Croix. They are about fly rod that i REALLY prefer to use. Plus they are priced excellent as well. My dad has one of them fancy Orvis rods ( that he never uses haha ) and i honestly like my St Croix's better. I never posted this here but i'll go ahead to add it. i was assuming the weight of 8-10 pounds of how he felt when i was holding him, all pumped and full of adreniline, well i ran one of those genaric fish weight calcs on it....he was more like 14-17 pounds with that so yeah...definitly a HUGE testiment to the rod, however that will be its first and last carp. and i uploaded one fo the videos i took, enjoy it...
