Not Too Sure How I Feel Right Now.

I've shot three deer so far this season. The buck I shot on opening day was a dandy, but I never could find him. The mechanical head I used was the Meatseeker. It did its job, but I didn't do mine as a hunter. The second buck I shot died around fifty yards from where I shot it. However, the blood trail was very,very scant. I had good shot placement, but no pass through. This buck had a big body, but come on I shoot 70lbs and he was ten yards away. Maybe I hit scapula, but hey at least the broadhead dropped him and I still found him. The deer I shot last night was harvested, but I really lucked out because I knew where it bedded down. The hit was kinda far back so I gave it time to die. Come to find out the blades didn't open fully. I'm not sure how that's possible with the design of these broadheads? All I can say is I was lucky to have found both deer I harvested, and I think I'm gonna stick with fixed blade heads from now on.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune with the expandables. I've never tried them, but I've heard too many stories of less than optimal performance. I've never swayed from Muzzy's, and I expect full pass throughs with every well placed shot. Anything less than a pass through always seems to leave a very sparse blood trail, or none at all. To this point, Muzzy has never failed me yet, although I did fail to find one small buck due to a high hit that got no vitals. The arrow was dark and meaty, and the blood trail dried up in about 80 yards.

The only real downside to fixed blades I can see is extra movement in the wind, but that's easily overcome by only shooting shorter ranges when it's overly windy.

Hope things work out better for you next time, losing a hit deer is a pretty sucky feeling. We've all been there.

I still use the Vortex expanders to 3", and I got enough to last my lifetime. If you see them buy them. They will cut a leg off of a deer with a heart shot, I never have to worry about that quarter of the deer..

When I bought mine they were very expensive, even in the early 90's, I don't think they are in bus anymore..
