Members Zach Beach Posted November 9, 2009 Members Posted November 9, 2009 My question is if using dry flies during the winter months work well, or do they stick the bottom too much to get them to the surface? Then my second question is about what , by definition, is exactly considered a fly. For instance would a marabou jig be considered a fly even if it is 1/16th. What about a kastmaster with a single hook or a mepps spiner with a single hook? I'm just looking for a little clarification before I go down there and get in trouble for being a dumb***. I would appreciate the insight.
FishinCricket Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 Any lure of some type of fabric or feather material that is Permanantly attached to a single hook.. No soft plastics is the only other pertinant stipulation I can think of.. Kastmaster with single hook fly? Ok (simple single hook with no fabric is not ok) maribou? Ok, regardless of size (you can attempt a 5 lb maribou cast if you want, but anything over about 1/16th ounce and your more likely to knock em out than you are to entice them to strike) mepps spinner with single hook? Ok Trout magnet plastic lure on weighted jighead? NOT OK As a tip: hit the suzy hole with that lil maribou... cricket.c21.com
NoLuck Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 Zach, Last year during C&R I did the best of all year with dry flies. Think small most of the time unless you see something that they are taking that is bigger. Hopefully the water gets back down a little and clears up so dry fly fishing gets good again. Rich
Members Zach Beach Posted November 10, 2009 Author Members Posted November 10, 2009 I appreciate the information on the definition of the lures. I have another question for you, where is the suzy hole? I have only been down there twice and I am just a little familiar with the place. I am also looking forward to going down there and being able to have more room along the bank than last time. I was down there three weeks ago and there wasn't a lot of room along the banks to fish. Since I'm new to fly fishing at times I need some extra room to cast my fly out there. I'm what you call a rookie. I was too worried about snagging a fellow fisherman than actually getting the fly out there. I like Bennet Springs and all it has to offer, I just don't care for the amount of people that are there.
FishinCricket Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 The Suzy hole is at the top of Zone three. Good news is it's not just my nickname for it, there's actually a sign in front of it and a big slab of concrete for disabled access.. Usually it's deserted during the c&r.. I am still a novice fly guy as well and was looking forward to utilizing the solitude of c&r season to perfect my cast and drift and such.. Why don't you take down my number (below) and gimme a shout when your coming down, maybe we can hook up? cricket.c21.com
Members Zach Beach Posted November 10, 2009 Author Members Posted November 10, 2009 Yeah Cricket I wasn't sure if it was your nickname or an actual spot on a map. I know my dad and I come up with our own names for the coves on LOZ. I won't be going down anytime soon since Deer season is starting and then Thanksgiving is coming up, but maybe sometime in December. That's if your not a fair weather fisherman. I know I've been called an idiot for going out in some nasty weather. Sometimes those end up being the best days to fish.

I go by the addage "if the fisherman is miserable, the fishin's prolly not", so I'll be there alot this winter.. Feel free to look me up! cricket.c21.com
rcguy Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 How are the water conditions? I lost my link to the Gauge House. If I ever find it can you tell me what normal flow is? I'm kinda dense I'm just waiting for a good day to run down there for some catching.
