Daveinozark Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 just wondering how the fishing is going lately? I went out last Sat with high hopes since the weather was warm, but couldn't find the bass. I even found schools of shad in the current behind Riverside, but no bass. Anyone know where the winter holes are for Finley? Is it better up on Linden lake or in the Ozark park where the water is deeper?

We'll see what happens to that area afterwards. Haven't heard yet of what they are planning to do there.
Wayne SW/MO Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 Is it better up on Linden lake or in the Ozark park where the water is deeper? Well they can't winter in Linden, but they could at Ozark. The Smallies change there habits drastically this time of the year, at least that's my experience. Slow is defiantly a necessity. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
smallmouthjoe Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 The last time I was on The Finley it looked like to me that a good potion of them had already transitioned into their winter haunts. They'll move to deeper slower water but can still be caught with very slow moving bottom bouncers. I've heard that they can be caught with suspending jerkbaits in the cold season but I have not had very much luck with them in the past. But I'm not a very good jerkbait fishermen.
RSBreth Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 I've heard that they can be caught with suspending jerkbaits in the cold season but I have not had very much luck with them in the past. But I'm not a very good jerkbait fishermen. We'll have to school you on the jerkbaits. It's not like you can throw them a year or two and be an expert, it's more like crankbaits - it takes a couple of years to get pretty good, then it seems that you get exponentially better as experience builds. Even jerkbait "experts" on flat water have a little trouble with current sometimes. You do better on shallow suspenders than the deep (or medium) divers you'd use at Table Rock. There isn't much going on w/the Finley. Water has been up and down, it's colder every week, and the leaves are like a blanket on top in some areas. Not the best conditions. Wait a couple of weeks for the Winter patterns to set up completely, then we'll see how it's doing.
smallmouthjoe Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 I've done really well with the fast retrieve jerkbait method you have in your article, but for some reason when it comes to any twitch and pause method I can't get it to work. I may be too impatient.
RSBreth Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 I get you on that. Winter fishing can be a slow grind.
Daveinozark Posted November 23, 2009 Author Posted November 23, 2009 hey guys, try the Tailwaters dam. I've been hitting it last couple of weekends, doing better there lately than the Finley. Laid into what I think was a large gar. pulled me around in my inflatable for about a min until my line broke. Wonder if there's any video of it on youtube
