Members yummysmokedham Posted December 3, 2009 Members Posted December 3, 2009 I will be out in Denver on President's Day weekend this coming February for some business and am planing on going out a day early. I am thinking about bring my fly rod along. Anyone have any experience with winter fishing in the Denver Area? I was thinking about the South Platte, just because it seems to have the most information online about it, but I am willing to go anywhere within a few hours drive on Denver. Is access to the South Platte, or any of the rivers, going to be an issue since I will be there in the winter? Thanks for any info in advance.
flyfishmaster Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 Yummy, (great name) Here are my suggestion that are within 2 hours of Denver. South Platte @ Deckers South Platte @ Cheeseman Canyon South Platte @ 11 Mile Canyon South Platte @ Spinney (aka "The Dream Stream") Blue River @ Silverthorn Blue River @ Breckenridge Big Thompson by Estes Park Colorado River @ Parshall Williams Fork by Parshall (might not have acces to this one, depends on the amount of snow) If you would like more info on any of these locations, just PM me. BTW: Where you wanting to go with a guide or not? Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
jah Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 I have fished the Big Thompson in Estes Park (and RMNP) and I loved it. Smaller fish, usually, but an incredibly helpful guide service at Kirk's Fly Shp in Estes Park. They have a weekly fishing report online, and their guides are great. Even when I didn't use a guide, they gave me all the info I needed to be successful on my own. Perhaps you can sneak me on the plane in your carry-on bag? I'd like to go.
Members yummysmokedham Posted December 3, 2009 Author Members Posted December 3, 2009 I had been looking at the Dekers area for a few days now, figured I could fish and see pike's peak in the same time. I have been debating about the guide service, I am leaning toward getting a guide since I have never fished that river before. BTW Southwest has some pretty good deals going on right now for flying to Denver from Tulsa
flyfishmaster Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 Deckers is a good area to fish, it has rebounded great since the Haymen Fire back in the June 2002. The water in this area can get some ice build up during this time of the year, so you will have to find out a few days before you go out to see what the conditions are like. If you are interested in a guide there is no one better than Pat Dorsey in CO. Heck he wrote the book on how to fish the South Platte River. CLICK HERE for his Book Click her for Pat Dorsey's Bio If you get his book, then I don't think you need a guide. I hope this helps you out. If not, contact me in a PM. Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
