Members Brent Posted February 21, 2010 Members Posted February 21, 2010 going down to bennett on march 12 for the weekend and i have just recently taken up fly fishing. and i was just looking for some advice on fly selection? or any other good tips for fishing the park. thanks. Bennet Springs is a great park, here are my suggestions. Aside from fly's you need to fish a light leader and tippet. A 9ft 6x/3lb test leader and tippet will work. I even use 7x/2lb test tippet when the fish are picky. As far as fly selection I like to fish small. Size 14,16,18 in Pheasant Tail Nymphs or Hairs ears under an indicator work. Scuds in the same sizes tan, gray, and olive in color under an indicator. Midges also work well in size 16,18 black and red. Adjust your lead shot according to the current and focus on getting a clean drift with your setup and you should do fine. I also suggest fishing in Zone 2. I think the water has a few more features that make it more fun to fish but zone 1 is great as well. If your there for the weekend I would dedicate a day to each. I'm far from an expert but I think that will get you started. I'm sure some others will chime in and help you out. Good luck and have fun!

No problem man. I have only fished two of the Missouri Trout Parks. The two being Bennett and Roaring River. I really like both, however I'm partial to Bennett. Bennett is where I learned to fly back in the day so I like to go there. I also prefer it because you can wade the water and the water changes throughout the park. Roaring River is a great park though. Most of it is restricted to bank fishing but it serves a good purpose and it's small enough that getting in the water wouldn't help much anyway. Give them both a try if you get the chance.
Wayne SW/MO Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 You might look up Ed at Larry's while you're there and get some recommendations from him. Ed actually fishes the park and he up front about what is working. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
stlfisher Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 I do very well fishing a #12 crackleback. I like to swing it with short strips. They will smash it. I have also done well with renegade's, griffith gnats, black/olive buggers, and olive mohair leeches. All the nymph's/midges mentioned above work great as well....especially the scuds. Montauk is my favorite to fish...it is less crowded...but I really enjoy Bennet. Meramac only during the winter season. I have not fished Roaring River yet, the lack of wading might turn me off. I will give it a shot one of these days though.
