Decent Forecast

Recommended Posts

Forecast looks pretty decent this weekend, and I need a day. I'm thinking about putting a full day in around the Patrick / Sunburst area... anybody else gonna be out there Sat or Sun? Maybe work out a shuttle or something?

I should be around this weekend, if you want to float from Sunburst to Patrick I could follow you down and you could leave your vehicle and I could bring you back here to start your float. It's less than a mile by road so no big deal.

Fished the islands the other day for just a little bit and the good water in between was completely stupid fishing. I was just messing with a new set-up, not really trying and just killed them. Bright sunny day with some BWO's coming off, a stone with a PT, Prince, or RFSN did really well.

Tear 'em up!! :goodjob:

Sounds great guys, looking forward to getting away for a day. Looks like it'll be Sunday for me. Thanks for the tips Brian, & thanks for the offer Justin. I may just end up walking, but either way I'll swing by the ranch and see if I can catch up with you for a visit.

The river is fishing well right now with Pats and RFSN. We fished from Kelly to Sunburst last Saturday and had a good day. I will be down next Friday to hit it again. Good luck, in my opinion this is the best time to fish the NFOW between now and Memorial Day!

Just now getting around to a report from last Sunday...

This was my first trip walking in to this stretch of water. Actually, considering I usually either float from Hammond to Sunburst, or from Patrick to Dawt, this might have been my first time fishing this stretch at all.

I fished fairly hard from 10 to about 2, and just managed 2 fish. I lobbed a stone for quite a while before dropping a prince behind it, and both fish came on the dropper.

Impressions? My first is that 900 cfs or more would be a chore to fish! My second impression was kind of a surprise about the no tresspassing signs reaching right down near the shore. I guess after spending some time on the Current and Eleven Point, it was just a bit of a surprise.

Anyways, I only lost 1 stone, so I probably wasn't fishing deep enough. I probably ought to quit being a cheapskate and pony up for some professional help on that river!

For reference I fished on Monday for about 1 1/2 hours and lost about 4 flies. I also caught 6 fish so I think you have hit the nail on the head about not being deep enough. I was fishing some moderate current with a heavy fly, only a couple feet deep and still added at least a BB, and sometimes a AAA, most fly fishermen don't even have those sizes in their box. BB is .4 grams, AAA is .8 grams (big sinkers). You have to realize even with the weight it takes a few seconds to get to the bottom, then you get a few more seconds of good drift then swing, then recast. Most people lucky to get 20 feet of good drift at good depth in fast water, if you don't use enough weight you might get 5 feet of good drift (what are the odds a fish is in that 5 feet of river, probably not good) then as it swings it doesn't stay down very long, once again above the fish. If you are down deep enough you will catch fish on the swing, and even as you lift your rod, take up a little line and get ready to re-cast, don't be surprised if you catch fish (you will luck in to several fish a day just getting ready to cast). I think Kyle is better at catching fish with less weight than most of us, but for me weight works!

900 cfs + wading = tough...period. That much water (not that it is a TON of water but still) makes the cast that much farther, the water that much faster AND deeper all adding up on top of each other. Like Justin said you can have your indicator set perfect at the right depth and say that depth is 9'...if your total drift is 20' long your flies were on bottom for maybe 2 or 3' of that whole drift.

There are a lot of things that can happen too if you are fishing that deep under an indicator the main one being you can get takes and the indicator will not show it--at all and if you are wading to waist deep chucking the heavy rig that is that deep it is a bear.

Before you pony up for professional help :) come by the Springfield Naure Center next Thursday at 7....I'll see if I can't throw some tips at you. :goodjob:
