I'm looking at getting a new pair of breathable waders for fishing during the summer because I cook inside my neoprenes in anything more than 60 degrees. Ideally, I would like to have a pair that I can use on the spring creeks here in Iowa as well as on Taney when the water is down. So here is my question for all of you taney guys, do you think that waist high waders would be okay of fishing taney when the water is off? I know there are a few spots where I would definately spill over, but by and large I'm thinking they would be workable but I haven't been down there recently and can't quite remember just how deep it gets.

I have a pair of waist high waders I have used on Taney for years, and (knock on wood) never filled them up by wading to deep. You just have to be careful, but that is the case with any waders.

Its always been my contention that if I am wading above my knees I am probably wading where I should be fishing... :D

Yeah, thats what I was thinking but I wanted to make sure. Around here hip boots work on all but the largest streams but I want something I can use on Taneycomo as well and it seems like waist waders would be the way to go. I spend a lot of time on the other side of the river, but I usually wade across in the riffle above rebar or straight out from #3. Heck, when I'm actually fishing I'm usually in ankle deep water or knee deep water.

If you are only going to have one pair I would go with breathable chest waders. If you didn't know - most breathables can be converted to chest high by rolling the top down and snapping the suspenders together. It works prettty good. I think breathables are pretty comfortable even in the hottest weather. Just MHO.

I have worn nothing but chest high waders for years but this year I decided to give the waist highs a try. They are much cooler and more comfortable. I concur with Danoinark in that if you are fishing in water over your knees you are probably in the wrong place. My only beef is that Simms doesn't make a waist high and I ended up with Orvis waders and they are not the same.
