jay bird Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 Went after some striper/hybrids on flyrods the other night. Had plenty of chances, but only one in the boat. Took a little while to figure out what they would hit then it was dark. Here is the one I got to the boat not sure of the size , but took a good 10 minutes to get in. Did not help that my buddy was on the front of the boat still chasing fish on the trolling motor as I was trying to get this one in.
zarraspook Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 That's got to be more fun than I could stand !!!!!!!!!!! "Look up OPTIMIST in the dictionary - there is a picture of a fishing boat being launched"
J-Doc Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 That's a nice fish there. Bet it was fun on a fly rod. Are the stripers and hybrids still just below mid lake level around the Coppermine area or below? I think the whites are active all over the lake. I've caught them from Indian Creek to War Eagle. I don't think they are stacked up in area. I think they are pretty active all over. Not to the point of big schools yet though. Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. jay bird Posted April 24, 2010 Author Posted April 24, 2010 This one was up by the Dam. We only took flyrods on this trip and it is really hard to get into range when they are busting on top. About 10-15 yards is my max in distance in the boat with my fly rod and that takes a little time to get it out that far. Fun Challenge though.
J-Doc Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 So what do you use for topwater when fishing for stripers? A big Zara spook? I've always been a large mouth and black bass angler. Sounds like trying the ocassional stryper topwater trip could be fun. Epecially with my 8yr old. I know stripers like bigger baits and you typically troll for them. Any other topwater lures besides a big spook? I assume the clear and bone are the preferred colors too? Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. I would have him throw a "RedFin" and not the 7"-9" inch'er but the 5-6 inch'er ...... My wife has caught stripers up to 14 lbs on the the "broke-back" model using 12 lb line.... being smaller it is eazy'er for her to handle.... PLUS - to work it you just wind fast enough to make a wake on the surface !!!!!!! As for color "you will have to ask the fish" !!!!!!!!!!!!!! ( the "somkey-joe is the one the wife throws the most ) "Look up OPTIMIST in the dictionary - there is a picture of a fishing boat being launched"
jay bird Posted April 24, 2010 Author Posted April 24, 2010 I use the big red fin in smokey joe, super zara spooks saltwater, and pencile poppers. I have different colors of the pencile poppers and spooks, but smokey joe refin is my goto bait. Topwater striper is probably my favorite type of fishing, but I would be careful with an eight year old you might lose a pole or have a wet kid these things pull hard once hooked.
Members coloradofly Posted April 26, 2010 Members Posted April 26, 2010 Jay bird, what fly were you using? where you fishing at night, or just at dusk. are you just casting to busting fish? Please let me know how you go about chasing these fish on a fly rod... hard fish to catch on the fly on beaver thanks
jay bird Posted April 27, 2010 Author Posted April 27, 2010 It was dusk and was chasing busting fish. Had some blow ups on a popper type fly but went with the old stand by, blue and white clouser. I have only had three on the fly rod, but each one was a lot of fun.( all on clousers) Not sure what it going to happen when I get a big one on, but can not wait to try.
